Windows 10: Add Scanner

My computer will not install my new scanner. Windows 10

Hi JSmith,

Your scanner should be installed first in order for your computer to recognize it. Since you're using a printer/scanner in one, you need to add or install the device as a printer and as a scanner. Make sure that the printer is properly connected to your
computer and is turned on when you try to install it. Follow these steps:

• Click Start > Settings > Devices.
• Under Add printers & scanners, click the + sign and select
  Add device.

Once added, try checking if you're able to scan. If your computer still doesn't detect the scanner, then we suggest that you get in touch with HP Support for further assistance.

How to add a scanner in Windows 10

I'm going to add some steps to this - either it is out of date or incomplete.

I will also add a personal comment: Windows 8 thru 10 - QUIT HIDING THINGS!!!! and FUNCTION BEFORE FORM/DESIGN!!!!

I say that as a Windows Sysadmin with 20 years exp.

Win 7 had the Scanners and Cameras wizard right in the control panel, later versions don't (at least not in the normal views)

Ok, now the useful bit. The above steps mostly work. Here are the differences:

1) Don't search from the Start Menu - Cortana will give you non-useful web results instead of want you want. Instead, go into control panel and use the search option in the top right to search for View Scanners and Cameras. The results will display an
option for View Scanners and Cameras under the larger title Devices and Printers (which btw, you can not access this from the actual Devices and Printers from Control panel - see personal comment above)

4) I am going to assume OP copied and pasted this from somewhere and thus the reason for listing Xerox specifically - it can be any TWAIN or WIA device compatible with Win 10 (Win 8 drivers and sometimes Win 7 may work).

As in the step, you hit Have Disk and browse to where your TWAIN or WIA drivers are for your scanner or multi-function copier. You will most likely need to grab them from the manufacturer's site. Use WIA over TWAIN if possible. Interesting note is that when
you select the driver file, normally the select list changes to only what the driver file contains usually just a few similar compatible models from that particular manufacturer. In my case, it didn't and I had to scroll down to find my manufacturer and then
see the available models list.

5-8) Steps Ok

This is what I had to do to get my 3rd party apps and even windows itself to load a scanner over network. The normal Devices and Printer add wizard and weird metro control menu option will try to search which it will never find, as it is a network device.
The prompt after for that wizard, at best, will only let you add a network printer because that is fairly common but in no way does it give you options for other kinds of network devices like scanners.

 

Epson 1200 scanner now working! Very pleased.


Worked perfectly,

• Installed 2400 series driver (when it asked what model I had I also picked, 1270 and 4180 since these had the Slide scanner interface I thought it might add a few extra drivers)
• Restarted PC
• Needed to use Device manager 'Updated driver'
• Assign 2400 driver. (See attached image)
• Be sure scanner is powered on so it appears in device manager.

Tested the Slide scanner attachment, I used PRO mode and it was discovered.
I had to use the plastic blackout slide holder (for masking the slide) to find the slide though.
