Controlled folder access helps you protect valuable data from malicious apps and threats, such as ransomware. It is part of Windows Defender Exploit Guard.

Controlled folder access in add an app to the list of safe or allowed apps to prevent them from being blocked.

You can add additional folders to the list of protected folders, but you cannot alter the default list, which includes folders such as Documents, Pictures, Movies, and Desktop. Adding other folders to Controlled folder access can be handy, for example, if you dont store files in the default Windows libraries or youve changed the location of the libraries away from the defaults.

This tutorial will show you how to add and remove a Turn On or Off Controlled folder access context menu for all users in Windows 10.

*Warning You must be signed in as an administrator to add, remove, or use the "Turn On or Off Controlled folder access" context menu.

*note The "Turn On or Off Controlled folder access" context menu will be available when you right click on the Desktop. This context menu will make it easy for you to turn on or off Controlled folder access on demand as needed without having to do so through Windows Security.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.


2. To Add "Turn On or Off Controlled folder access" to Desktop Context Menu
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

3. To Remove "Turn On or Off Controlled folder access" from Desktop Context Menu
*note This is the default setting.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Here's the context menu for adding apps to the allowed list to help.

That quote means that you can add an .exe file you consider to be safe to be allowed access to your protected folders. Basically, an app exception list.

 

How to get rid of old context menus?

I was going to suggest editing teh registry , but....

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
