Windows 10: Adding 2nd Display in Windows 10 now puts laptop to sleep in 30 seconds

I recently added a 2nd display an HP 271x monitor to my laptop Lenovo Thinkpad and set up the display as one continuous desktop display.

Ever since doing this, I've noticed the laptop will go to sleep in 30 seconds unless I constantly move the mouse.

I have found an odd work around that if I turn my laptop camera on, it seems to not go to sleep.


My screensaver settings are set to "NONE" while my power down sleep settings are already set to 30 mins when plugged in.

Is there anything else I can do to prevent my laptop going to sleep without the odd camera workaround?

Laptop restarts when I put it to 'sleep' mode

Hi All!

Just bought a brand new HP envy 15 (2020 edition). On the 2nd day it was updating windows and bios and then i noticed that my laptop restarts whenever i put it to sleep.

To be precise, this is what happens step by step:

1. I put the laptop to sleep

2. It goes to 'sleep'

3. 20 seconds in and it restarts or start from new.. all the apps that i left on when puting laptop to sleep are now gone..

Can anyone help?

Log in/Sign in every 30 seconds

One of the possible cause, why your laptop asks you to re-log in, is because of the current power option set on your system.

Can you tell us if your laptop goes into sleep mode after 30 seconds?

If so, kindly follow the steps to further isolate the root cause of this issue.

• Type Power & sleep in the search bar, then click on it.
• Check if your current power option is set for your device to go into sleep mode after 1 minute.
• Change it to never and see if the issue will occur.

Laptop restarts on each 2nd attempt to sleep.

I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: I suggest you to follow the below steps.

Step 1: I suggest you to run the Power troubleshooter.

• Type troubleshooting in the search bar.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click on Power.
• Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Step 2: Also you may install the latest display drivers from the manufacturer's website for Windows 10 and check if it helps.

Method 2: Start the computer in Safe mode.
