Windows 10: adding new 6TB to windows 10

If your Gigabyte motherboard is 6 years old or older, it could be limited to supporting drives up to 2.2 TB but no larger, without adding a supplemental driver. Tell us what motherboard you've got and we can figure that out pretty quickly. You should include that level of detail in your "My Computer" info anyway.

I don't know if this thread should be here or in storage, anyway it's a hardware problem.
Got a new WD 6TB (black) and I don't know how to add it to windows 10 pro.
Board is Gigabyte z87 d3hp
Do I add new disk from windows?
should I have a bootable cd to do the job?
does my board support 6TB (if formated as gpt)?

Original title: Installing a 4TB & 6TB WD Internal HDD on Windows 10

Hi Guys

I am trying to install 2 new HDDs. One is WD Blue 4TB for all my videos & pictures and WD Black 6TB for my games. I currently have Windows installed on a WD Green 2TB drive.

The problem is that WD Blue is not showing up at all on bios & Disk Management but my WD Black 6TB is showing up on both Bios and Disk Management. I'm still having major problems with WD Black 6TB as shown in the picture below





The WD Black 6TB is Disk 0 but i can't initialize the HD either through MBR or GBT as i get either a "The Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" on MBR or "The specified Disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum
size required for GPT Disks" on GPT

I've tried Diskpart as well but no success

As you can probably imagine i've spent quite a bit of money on these 2 new HD's so its rather annoying that its not as easy to install HDs as what it used to be!

Boot issue.

Windows 7 or 10 will not boot when my 6TB WD external USB drive is connected.

 

Are you just wanting to add the new drive to your system and use it as storage and keep your existing C drive? Are you wanting to use is the C drive?

 

If you just want to add the HDD as additional storage for your system, you only need to plug it in and boot into Windows.

In Windows open up Disk Management and make the disk partition scheme GPT and format it as NTFS. Finally, if Windows did not automatically give your new drive a drive letter, then manually assign it one using Disk Manager.

Done!


If Windows can not find your drive at all, then check your BIOS/UEFI firmware that the disk is enabled and also in Windows, make sure you have all relevant SATA controller drivers up to date.

 

The disk is supposed to be for data only (no system, no programs)
disk management doesn't show a new unallocated space
bios doesn't show anything new either
so my conclusion is that my board does not support this volume
and of course upon replacing the board all sata sockets will be replaced

 

Hmmm...check your cables and check your BIOS a few times...might be something is disabled there or it just didn't pick up the drive for some reason.

 

Referring to the manual it seems you can individually enable and disable each SATA port on your MB. Check that the port you have connected the drive to, is enabled.

 

It cannot possibly have anything to so with sata cable or BIOS since the sata I used was taken from a disk that worked before (and still working after I reconnected the sata to this disk) moreover all sata are enabled in BIOS.
I still think that the board does not support 6TB
it happens
will have to let the lab deal with it

Hmmmm....maybe the drive is faulty. You should see some sort of record in BIOS, no matter HDD size.

On the other hand, I've heard(rumors but no facts) Gigabyte MBs can have the most bizarre issues...do you have latest BIOS installed?
