Adding Routers and Printers to a PC running Windows 10 Pro

The way I would handle this is to reset the router, you at the moment do not know how the device is setup - DHCP could be disabled so there is no way it will auto allocate IP addresses

You will need to do some research as to ...

    • The reset procedure - normally there is an inset button that needs to be pressed for a few seconds
    • The administrator Name
    • The administrator Password
    • The default device IP address (the gateway address)

This information should be available online , (if not printed on the back / base of the device

Once you have this information a simple connection should allow access to the internal settings, Also you should check if a specific port must be used for this initial setup

If you are not sure of the way to proceed, post the full details of the router(s) involved and we will try to find and provide you with a step by step solution

  2. Thanks Slicendice, I never thought to change to static address when I was trying to connect.

Sorry I wasn't OP. I was the guy that started off asking about specifics on devices and suggested resetting routers. We are all awaiting info from thread starter.

  5. Attached please find the results of running ipconfig when the PC connects to me normal router and when I try and get it to connect to the new router. I would appreciate any insights from anyone.

The port light on the router lights up when plugging in a cable but that is as far as it goes. On both routers, ipconfig shows that DHCP is enabled on the realtek interface, with the default gateway and DHCP is set correctly.

But on the new router the default gateway value is blank with the interface looking for DNS servers on the wrong gateway.

Unfortunately, a reset does not seem to change anything. Is there anything in the windows setup that will prevent the PC form re-initialising the interface leading to whatever the router is trying to do being ignored??

I will try and get more detail of the router from the owner ..... (that is IF he kept any of the manuals and software associated with the
router) except for the start up guide.

I have never before had this problem with my PC. All this started after the last round of Windows 10 updates, but I would very much like to know if I have not inadvertently changed some or other parameters in the network setup.

What is the significance of the word "preferred" behind some of the entries?

    Code: Working router ( used to connect) Ethernet adapter Ethernet: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.XX(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, 06 February 2017 15:56:32 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, 07 February 2017 15:56:32 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.xxx DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.xxx DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 83923189 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.xxx NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled The second router I am trying get to work. "An error occurred while renewing interface Ethernet: Unable to contact your DHCP server, request timed out."

So what is preventing the interface from clearing the DHCP server setting or allowing it to be renewed?

  6. Simple question, what is make and model number of router?

  7. Make sure you follow the specific reset instructions for the make and model router. Some require pressing and holding the reset switch for a specific time while its powering/booting up. Pressing the rest button any other time does nothing. You can usually tell its working by watching the status LED's.

Wireless HP LaserJet Pro P1102w here. I had to connect to it from my PC via USB to set it up for my WIFI network. Only had to do that once though. Now on a clean install Windows 10 detects it and installs the driver via Windows update.

Your getting a 169 IP which means it not getting an IP from the router have you tried another cable if we know make model of router we can find IP and you can set a static IP to access it

As long as you know the current IP address of the router simply entering Web Server's Default Page, (where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP address of the router), into your browser, whatever your actual IP, should load the initial login screen of the built-in web server and prompt to login

You can also check connectivity from a CMD prompt (here you need to manually assign an ip in the same subnet) using ping nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn or tracert nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

Obviously the actual IP address of the router must be known

  10. Thank you to all that provided suggestions. I tried them all and the process of elimination of possible causes
did help to get to the point where the problem seems to be with the routers and not with the PCs.

Firstly, the 10.0.0.2 thing seems to be a local south African phenomena with our Telkom ISP.

Most of their new routers all default to this setting.

The router giving the most problems is a Mega 105WR ( a local name) ADSL router, 802.11g wireless with an integrated 4 port switch.

The other router turns out to be a Aztech 700 WR-3G router ( also locally branded by Telkom SA). Both routers have a default ip address 10.0.0.2 user name "admin" and password "admin", IF one can get it reset.

Both routers were used by someone who configured new passwords and who knows what else.
The printer is HP laserjet Pro CM1415fnw, with both USB and Ethernet ports as well a wireless interface.

I managed to get hold of another Aztech 700WR which has not been changed from its defaults, and have found that my PC and the other PC will connect to this router without any difficulties. At least that now eliminates the PCs and WIN 10 Pro from having anything to do with the issues we are having with the one router.
After many "resets" the 700WR router is now accessible and reset to its defaults and is now working as it should do, finding the correct DHCP server etc.

  11. Spot on! That was the problem. The reset button had to be pressed immediately after powering up for about 10 seconds after which the router reset itself! I thought I was going crazy!

(Not that the manual for that router (which I finally found on the Internet) says that! It simply says press the reset button for 10 seconds ----- )

Thank you very much for the help!

Both routers are now functioning as they should.

( now to find that reset button for the printer !) *Rolleyes
