Windows 10 May 2019 Update is approaching 50% install base.

The growth of Windows 10 May 2019 Update (1903) in September wasn't as dramatic as it was in August. Still, it added more than 10% to its usage share.

And again a bigger chunk of the May 2019 growth comes from April 2018 Update users upgrading.

Note: we don't have the data for the initial rollout of the first update to Windows 10 (1511, also known as Threshold 2). So it's a straight line from 0 to the first data point we have on August 22nd, 2016.

Surface Family

We haven't looked at the Surface device distribution since February. But it's only appropriate to take a snapshot now before the next generation of Surface PCs is announced next month.

While the usage share of newer Surface machines has grown, it didn't grow enough to affect the order of models in the chart — it is the same as it was early this year.

Will Windows 10 October 2018 Update reach critical mass before the next update is released?

Out of more than 100,000 PCs surveyed, only 12.4% run the October Update.

While this number is almost double of what we've seen last month, it's still far away from the dominating April 2018 Update (80.2%).

With only a few months to go until the next Windows 10 update is supposed to go mainstream, it is unclear if some PCs may have to install two major updates within a short period of time or go straight from A18U to 19H1.

October Update has been growing steadily over the last couple of months, but it clearly needs to accelerate in February or be scrapped altogether in favor of going straight to 19H1.

This month's Surface chart is an interesting insight into how new devices go up in our charts right after holidays, when people are setting them up and exploring new apps, and then scale down a bit when things get settled.

All newer models have dropped in usage share on the AdDuplex network in January compared to December.

Obviously, there isn't much room for A18U to grow anymore, but it still added almost 3% to its share over the month.

It is unlikely that April 2018 Update will reach the top level penetration of its predecessor — Fall Creators Update. Next month we are likely to see October 2018 Update in the mix and this means that it will start taking the market share from A18U before it reaches 92%+ share FCU enjoyed back in April.

Surface Family

Surface Pro (2017) is now the second most popular Surface device in use. It moved swiftly past Surface Pro 3 over the month with more than 2% lead.

Surface Go has doubled its share since last month but this is not nearly enough to make an impressive dent in the overall chart.

Another month of steady but slow Windows 10 October 2018 Update market share growth.

After updating the numbers, it seems that the overall analysis could be carbon copied from January and remain accurate. So, that's what we'll do...

Out of more than 100,000 PCs surveyed, only 21.2% run the October Update.

While this number is almost double of what we've seen last month, it's still far away from the dominating April 2018 Update (71.6%).
