Admin Acct & Pswd Don't Open MS Edge, Etc

When I first bought this laptop I was able to use MS Edge, MS Games, etc. I didn't like having to sign in every time I sat down since I was the only one that uses it, so I disabled that feature. Now, I've decided I'd like to use them. So, I went in and added my pswd, and I even added my PIN, but it still won't give me access to those features. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    GPL

how can I set a pswd for the admin acct - Win 10 ?

I recently enabled the admin acct. and noticed that when I click the 'sign in' tab , I'm in. I'd want to follow my best practice of setting a pswd for any acct on my pc. So, I'd like to know the best approach to do this for the admin acct.

and if there are any known issues when doing this aside from forgetting the pswd.

Which does lead into a 2nd Q. If I do forget or have a problem with all pswds is there a procedure to reset them ? Has never happened to me but just in case.....

how can I set a pswd for the admin acct - Win 10 ?

I'm referring to the built-in admin. acct. The reason I enabled it was for troubleshooting. I always use a defined user acct. for day-to-day use. I want to assign a pswd to the build-in admin. acct.

    thanks

The first question I could ask here would be when the laptop was bought but still end up being available after 10's launch but not after the Threshold 2 Update released in November! So you likely have the OEM version for the 10240RTM build there and can try a few things before considering a refresh!

Since Edge is still a work in progress but only lately has been seeing some much needed corrections in the latest Windows Insider Preview builds you have the option to go that route to see the 10240 replaced by way of the Windows Updates into the latest build. With the Threshold 2 being buggy on me I went for the 14271 just now being replaced by the 14279 build. The first things to try would be the System File Checker "sfc /scannow" command entered at the Command prompt(admin) option you get to with a fast right click on the Start button and simply scroll down to.

After that tool runs for a good period of time allowing you to take a break for coffee or tea it will report whether or not any system files were fixed or not able to be fixed where previously with past versions the recommendation of having the Windows disk in the drive while running the tool was made since the tool would then be able to extract the replacement files needed..

The other tool available will run while Windows isn't running and while you can run a fast Disk Check by bringing up the properties screen on the C drive in particular to open the Tools tab and click on the Check button under Error checking scheduling a run of the tool for the next startup would be advised. With the Command prompt(admin) window still open and even before entering the "sfc /scannow command" you would simply type the "chkdsk /r/f" command with both the R=Repair and F=Fix repair switches added onto the end of the command as seen there. You omit the quotation marks however.

After the SFC runs you will be waiting for a bit with the restart seeing the Disk Check tool prompting to press any key in so many seconds to prevent the tool from running which can take another lengthy period of several minutes to cover all the stages of verification and repairs.

By running those two tools however any corrupted system files being replaced as well as disk errors on the main drive are taken care of. Simply rolling things back by use of a System Restore point wouldn't see any of those types of problems corrected while going back far enough before the problem was first may take a bit if you don't have any of the first made. That was while you were still using the password option initially however and would mean loss of any programs added on in between then and now.

I tried getting this issue addressed in the General Support forum, but never got any satisfactory solutions. I shouldn't have to make more than 2-3 ticks, if that, to get back FULL ADMIN privileges. This is DEFINITELY one feature MSoft should have left alone.

When I first bought this laptop (Last week of 12/15) I was able to use MS Edge, MS Games, etc. I didn't like having to sign in every time I sat down since I was the only one that uses it, so I disabled that feature. Now, I've decided I'd like to use them. So, I went in and added my pswd, and I even added my PIN, but it still won't give me access to those features. What am I doing wrong?*Mad*Mad*Mad

Sorry JDS, I thought I gave the error msg it was giving me. The above apps (MS Edge, Calc, etc) "can't be opened using the Built-in Admin account. Sign in with a different acct and try again."

    Thanks,

No! You don't understand. It's BECAUSE I used the Built-in Admin acct that I can't log into the apps. I don't even know what the freakin' "Built-in Admin" is. I'm now signing in using a 4-digit PIN. I just need to know how to get back to the default means of logging in.

  12. Are you logging in with a local account or a Microsoft ID? How did you disable the auto logon? Are you logging in with an account you created? If yes, is it a Standard or a Administrator account?

    Alpha,

In general, I'm pretty confused by now. I'm not that stupid, just confused. I don't remember disabling the auto logon. At least I don't remember going to a Cmnd prompt. I've tried the solutions that JDS63 for disabling. Seemed simple enough, but I still can't open those apps that I mentioned above. What I REALLY don't understand is why those apps are DISABLED when I'm in an ELEVATED Admin account.

Those apps are disabled in Elevated Admin accounts because they can be used as back doors for Trojans and viruses. They can only be accessed using User level accounts and Administrator group accounts that have UAC enabled - the UAC prompt is designed to be the protection against Trojans and viruses. Running those apps from elevated admin accounts means that those apps would have administrator access to the computer with no notification popping up to indicate they were accessing protected computer resources.

The built in administrator account or other elevated account was never intended for general use. Aside from Apps not working there are some other issues with such an account. This is by design, not a bug.

While using an elevated account is convenient it is also a security risk. By default programs you run will inherent the rights of your account. If one of those programs is malicious, and this is very hard to prevent, it will be able to do just about anything it wants to. When XP was released in 2001 and admin accounts were always elevated that was acceptable but not recommended. In 2016 it is no longer an acceptable risk. You can run with a full time elevated account if you must but there are consequences.
