    Hello, all.

I am planning to create editable text files from old essays and academic papers which I only have hard (paper) copies of. By means of this, I may rework the originals, changing grammar and adding additional material. I think that I can achieve this by either: (1) scanning with an OCR capable scanner and then exporting the resulting text file to MSWord as a .docx, (2) scanning with a non-OCR capable scanner and opening the resulting image .pdf in Adobe Acrobat pro, and using the...

    Windows 10 OCR

There is no way to leverage the OCR API in Windows 10 unless you are a developer and write an application to call functionality from Windows.Media.Ocr.OcrEngine

There are many OCR Packages out there from Free to very expensive (Best is ABBYY FineReader). If I were you I would download the now free Adobe Acrobat PRO 8.0 which has a very good OCR engine built in.

Note this is not Acrobat reader, it is the Full Package and is now free!

One final thought, have you tried the OCR capability in MS OneNote . . .

    I hope this Helps!

    OCR

MS Office 2010 Home and Student.
That comes with OCR in Microsoft OneNote 2010, look in your all programs list under Office. That has OCR. It will start with an offer of a free upgrade but cancel that for the moment.

Start up a new Notebook > Insert picture > Select picture > Right click > Copy text from picture(this is the OCR bit).

Then obviously paste text into what ever you want, Word 2010 etc.

The hidden corners of your applications you never knew you had...

If you have a flatbed scanner or similar they are usually supplied with a cut down version of some OCR application. My old HP Scanner came with a cut down version of Iris OCR.

    Adobe releases Adobe Acrobat 8

The well known company Adobe has today released Acrobat eight. This new Acrobat version claims to do more then just load with Windows and read whatever is encoded in PDF. It claims to have a faster load time, a sleek and modern user interface, the easy conversion of PDF to common file types, a new user chat interface, along with several other neat features. The user chat interface is designed for web conferences, and should allow for multi-platform firewalled and encrypted chats. Adobe promises that this Acrobat will be very easy to use, and has a lot of potential for its customers. It should be available in November 2006 for between $100 and $450, depending on if you are upgrading and the version you are buying.
