Windows 10: Adobe CS2 will no longer install on Windows 10 Pro x64

I got InDesign CS2 (4.0) installed on my desktop a while ago. But now I want to use Audition 3.0 and Premier Pro 2.0.

The installers will not work. They launch, I select English, the next dialog box flashes and it's gone. The automatic troubleshooter selects XP Pro SP3 compatibility mode but that changed nothing.

The programs themselves *will work*. People who've had them installed for a while (like I have InDesign) don't have problems with them running on 10. It's just the installation seems to be broken or blocked by some more recent update to Windows 10.

I'm not running any AV other than Windows Defender.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10, most of my applications work fine except with Adobe CS2.

Here is the problem:

CS2 installs fine, however, once I turn off the computer, it totally disappears. The desktop icon greyes out, when I look in the program files x86 folder, the CS2 folder is there but its empty.

I've tried re-installing it several times and have the same issue each and every time.

As a note: If I do not turn the computer OFF, CS2 works fine.

My question is then why is it that in Windows 10 (Didn't have this problem in Windows 7) does CS2 disappear?

I am ready to ditch 10 and go back to good old windows 7

 

Did you run the installer "as administrator"? Do you have UAC disabled, that can cause weird things to happen?

 

This is the problem with running older programs like InDesign CS2 (released in 2005) on a new OS like Windows 10. Each new Win 10 update/upgrade has the potential to break old software. And where vendors of said software (Adobe in this case), are no longer supporting old versions, this is the new reality.

 

Turning UAC off did nothing. They still quit during the preparing phase.

Turning to my laptop, a Dell Latitude E6530, with 10 Pro x64 1703 15060.608 - same as the desktop, Premiere Pro 2 and Audition 3 installed, no problem.

How can I find what's blocking the install on my desktop, that's not blocking them on the laptop?

Edit: I copied the installers to a USB stick to try on the laptop. Tried from the USB on the desktop and they install. WTH? Why would it make one whit of difference if the install is being run from a hard drive, which is plugged into a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard, or a USB 3.0 flash drive, which is plugged into a port on a PCIe x1 USB 3.0 adapter? Something in the setups that checks to see if the install media is a "hard disk" and shuts itself down?

 

That sounds very likely. A USB stick is seen by Windows as 'removable media' whereas an external HDD is seen as a fixed drive. It may be a 'security feature' built into the Setup to discourage piracy, or it may just be bad programming. Either way, you got it to work now and know how to do so in the future.

 

Could be that it won't install from a driver over 2TB.
