After a "Windows" issue, I have no brightness control and my laptop runs somewhat slower....

My laptop screen went black for a short time while i was "surfing the web" and came back on with a full greenish blue Windows screen saying "something went wrong. We are working on it. Do not unplug your device". Long story short, my laptop got turned off, not unplugged. It powers up fine but now I have no brightness control with the keys on the keyboard or the manual slider bar in settings, which is "greyed" out. It also runs somewhat slower over all, and some games now run extremely slow. My Dell Inspiron running Windows 11 is still in warranty so I contacted them and they ran some online t

  2. Can not control the laptop brightness

    Hi Dinh,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience you are facing currently.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

What happens when you try to change the screen's brightness?

For a majority of laptops, there isn't a control for setting the contrast. However, you can set the brightness of many laptops by pressing and holding the Fn key, and then pressing a function key to decrease brightness
    or increase brightness.

I suggest you to uninstall the display driver from your computer and then install in Compatibility mode.

To uninstall the driver follow the steps given below.

    • Press Windows key + X and select
      Device Manager.

    • Search for Display Adapter
      and expand it.

    • Right click on the Display Adapter
      and select Uninstall.

    • Do not restart your computer.
Once you have successfully uninstalled the driver, please install the driver in compatibility mode following the steps given below.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows

    (Applies to Windows 10)

Hope the information helps. Please let us know if the issue persist and we will be happy to assist you further.

  3. issue for the brightness control

    Hi Rushi,

Driver issues can be one of the reasons why you're having issues with adjusting the brightness. To isolate your concern, we would like to ask for the following:

    • Were there any changes or updates installed on your computer prior to the issue?
    • Are you getting any error messages?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest starting your computer in safe mode. This will start Windows using a limited set of drivers.

Feel free to post back, and we'll assist you further.

Brightness Control not working in Windows 10

    Hi Ella,

To adjust the brightness, see the steps below:

    • Go back to Power Options, and tick on the High performance.
    • See if you can adjust the brightness.

If this not work, we highly suggest that you create an Administrator account, and re-do the steps above.

Let us know how it goes.
