    After applying the 5/19 Update, I lost Activation. How do I fix?


    This is a desktop that used the free upgrade to go from W7 to W10. It ran W10 successfully for a long time. I recently applied the 5/19 update and it said it couldn't activate (80072EE7). I contacted support, and spoke to a supervisor (Sumit) in escalation. He said that my W7 product code was a valid code for Windows 10. However, since I used the free upgrade, my code was a W7 code, so Microsoft would give me no help if an activation went bad after an update. My only options were to buy a new code (he pushed this very hard) or completely uninstall windows, reinstall windows 7, and try the upgrade again (and of course, upgrades are no longer free). I.e., he wanted me to completely rebuild my system in the hope (no guarantee) that things would go better this time.


    I can't believe this is Microsoft's policy. I was a valid Windows 10 user, applying an update as recommended by Microsoft, and something went wrong. Shouldn't Microsoft fix my issue?

    The error code 19 describes that, Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

    Recommended resolution

    • Uninstall and reinstall the driver.
    • Revert to the most recent successful registry configuration.
    Before we could reset the computer to factory settings, I suggest you to refer to the below article and perform the troubleshooting steps suggested for error code 19.

    The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

    Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.
