After Clean Win 10 install, no longer move/save files to external HDD

    Hello All:

I installed an Archer C2600 router and connected to one of its USB3 slots an external USB3 hard drive and thought I gave all users permission to read/write all files on the external HDD.

Recently, I had to do a clean install of Windows 10 and since then, I have not been able to do the following:

    (1) start portable apps that are saved on the external HDD;

    (2) when downloading anything with a browser (usually Firefox, but also Edge and IE), I cannot save the downloaded file/executable/etc. straight to the external HDD; and

    (3) I cannot cut and paste files/folders from an internal HDD to the external HDD.

Regarding No. 3, Explorer just continues to show 0% complete and when I go to cancel the transfer, the already open dialogue box indicates it is canceling, but never stops "Canceling[.]"

Q: Can anyone help me trouble shoot what the problem might be?

    Thank you,

Created fresh Windows 10 install after hard drive crashed

    Hi,

I would suggest installing the Win 8.1 on the SSD and then doing the free upgrade to Win 10... The requirement for the free upgrade is "Upgrade"...

That pretty much means the only option is to install Win 10 from within a functioning Win 7 SP1 or 8.1... Once that has been done, and activated, you can then do clean installs...

What type of Win 8.1 installation do you have on the HDD... preinstalled or retail ?

Are you trying to save data, software, or both...

If trying to save data... copy it from the SSD to a external drive, or try the HDD first if it will handle it...

  3. Win10 install onto external HDD with previous personal files?

I'm looking to perform a clean install of Windows 10 on my computer, but I've been thinking of actually performing an install onto my external HDD instead and make it the new primary HDD. The thing is, I currently use my external HDD as my backup drive for
    all my personal files.

There is no previous OS installed on the external HDD, only the backup files are present. If I install the external HDD into my computer and boot it as the primary HDD, and subsequently attempt to install Windows 10 (and necessary drivers) onto it, will
all my previously backed up files be erased during the install? Or will they be preserved?

After Clean Win 10 install, no longer move/save files to external HDD

Update: I found and updated the firmware and until I restarted my computer (with Microsoft updates updating during the restart), all was working just fine. Sheesh.

I have also tried to use TeraCopy but I keep getting the same error found in one of the above images: "The request is not supported."

    Thank you for your time,

Alrighty. I am not sure what more I can do to troubleshoot this, so I guess I will have to get more creative.

    Thank you,
