Hi,

I upgraded my existing windows 7 to windows 10.

After that, I bought an SSD drive and wanted to perform a clean install of windows 10 on that drive.

I downloaded and burned the ISO using Microsoft's tool, booted from the DVD and started the installation on the new SSD drive.

Got to the product key phase, entered my windows 10 product key (from the OS after the upgrade), and it gives me the error in the title.

What can I do?

How can I get a matching product key?

After Download the windows 10 .iso file how can i upgrade it to 10 from 8.1 using that downloaded .iso file , before i do a clean install.?

After going through several post on internet & Microsoft community, it is clear to me that if i want to enjoy the windows 10 for free, i have to upgrade it from my 8.1 to windows 10 frist & activate it, then i can perform a clean install, otherwise if i
directly perform a clean install , my windows 10 wont be activated.

I have 2 pc with version 8.1 pro & W7 ultimate. How can i directly upgrade my existing os using the downloaded W10 .iso file ?

 

We are hoping MS produces a Windows Media creator tool for Windows 10... failing which there is a list of ESD's here...and ISO's could be created from them.

If MS does not come up with something I'll release my version...

One would assume it would work with a legitimate product key from Win7 or Win8. But it seems MS has not been entirely clear on how any of this will work as it relates to USB or DVD install media with an ISO.

 

No. This seems to be a persistent rumor, born of the fact that you don't have to enter a key when upgrading or doing a clean install after the upgrade.

There is no key at all encoded in the ESD.

 

The tool is now available.

So if one were to make a USB/DVD ISO. Could they use it on a Windows XP or Vista computer to do a clean install and have it activated?

Short answer: NO.

(Did you think they'd make it that easy to circumvent the requirements for the free upgrade?)
