Windows 10: After KB5035942 update installed, second monitor not working properly

My ASUS Zenbook laptop is x64 running Windows 11 23H2. I always have a second monitor connected as the inbuilt monitor has a terrible glitch. The second monitor is used most of the time.This morning, Windows Update ran and installed KB5035942. As soon as installation was complete, my second monitor screen went black.I was able to switch back to the inbuilt monitor. If I switch to only work with the second monitor, the second monitor goes black. If I use extended mode, the second monitor shows properly, with task bar showing. However if I try to open anything in the second monitor, it immediate

Windows update KB5035942 installs every day

Thanks for your suggestions. I had previously tried the Troubleshooter and SFC & DISM steps. I read about Microsoft update KB5036567, which claims to fix issues related to KB5035942. I downloaded it from the Microsoft Catalog, and used the command dism /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"CAB location" to install the update. The dism ran very quickly and indicated success. I restarted my PC but do not see KB5036567 in the update history list. So I'm not sure if I really installed the update, especially given how quickly the dism ran.

Second monitor not detected after update

Hi Tom,

There are several reasons that could have caused the issue you are experiencing. One of these is the update you previously performed in Windows, either it was not configured properly by the system or the update components were corrupted. Kindly answer the
following questions for clarification:

• Have you tried updating the monitor and display drivers?
• Have you tried to use another user profile to check if the issue re-occurs?

Furthermore, we suggest that you add the other monitor manually. This is to ensure that the second monitor is still connected after the update. Here are the steps:

• Type connected devices and open Connected Devices on the
  Windows Search bar.
• Click Add devices.
• Select the Second screen.
• Pick one of the 3 options: Duplicate, Extend, and the Second screen only.
• The Duplicate option will duplicate the primary display to secondary display.
• The Extend option will unite two monitors so you can use them both as one.
• The Second screen only option will, obviously, disable primary and use only the secondary monitor.
• Once you’ve chosen the preferred mode, save changes.
