After leaving PC for a few minutes, everything grinds to a halt Disk 100%

I have a Windows 10 PC with a decent gaming setup and a large hard drive. But whenever I leave my computer for over 2 or 3 minutes, it suddenly locks up for about 30 seconds and the computer slows down. Nothing launches, nothing responds, I can't click on anything. I have checked the task manager and when the computer freezes, it shows that the Disk is at 100% usage because 'System' is taking up all of the disk usage.

This problem is getting really frustrating because even if I have a game running and I pop to the kitchen to get a snack for a couple of minutes, when I return the computer has locked up and I have to wait for 30 seconds for it to return to normal speed.

I am not sure what is causing 'System' to run at 100% Disk in the Task Manager, but I have a theory.

I am pretty sure it is not hardware that is causing the problem.

Whenever a Windows Update is going to take place, just before it, the computer slows down significantly even when it is in use for a varying amount of time like this problem, but not quite as bad - the computer is still usable but everything takes a while to load.

My very uneducated guess would be that Windows detects that the computer user is idle and does work maybe search for updates. If so, is there any way to turn it off, so it either searches for updates when I am not using it I could allocate a time or it only does it when I specifically tell it to for each update?

    Thanks,

    Oliver

  2. 100% disk usage on boot up for at least 5 to 10 minutes

Hi there, I did a clean boot as you suggested and the boot up time became considerably longer and although disk usage was 100%, this was only for a minute or so. The program at the top of the disk utilisation list this time though was service host:superfetch.

However I then didn't disable anything in the services tab but disabled all the programs in the startup tab and restarted. This resulted in a very speedy boot up AND there was no 100% disk utilisation. I've done this several times enabling a couple of programs
on startup and the disk utilisation is no longer 100%.

It appears therefore as though it was some kind of conflict in the startup programs that was causing the 100% disk utilisation.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Windows 10 freezes, Disk usage 100%

I just couldn't take having my supposedly high end I7 laptop with 16 Gig ram grind to a halt anymore. This works:

    Replace: WDC WD10SPCX-60KHST0 - 931.51 GB

    with

WD Blue 1TB Internal SSD Solid State Drive - SATA 6Gb/s 2.5 Inch - WDS100T1B0A.

    No more 100% disk usage.

    Disk Usage % Maxed out

About once a day my disk usage goes to 100% (Task Manager) for quite a while and my machine grinds to a halt. Is Defender reorganizing my disk and if so how do I control this?
