Windows 10: After lock or sleep, the computer displays a black screen with only a mouse pointer.

The issue is interment, affects only our laptops.

When the user locks and then tries to unlock, the screen is black with only a mouse pointer

alt+tab indicates logonui is running but it is not visible

Ctl alt + del has no effect

Holding Win key + Ctrl + Shift then pressing B we managed to restored access to one computer (this resets the video driver)

But generally we need to force power off and back on again.

All affected computers have different video drivers and bios versions



Happens once out of the blue and sometimes again after several weeks.

Happens when docked or un-docked



Nothing found in the logs since the computer may not even recognize it as an error.



Our users have reported the issue on Dell - 7390, 5530, 5289, 7285, 5290 laptops and a HP Elite laptop

Out of our ~2000 computers, we have had 10 reported cases in the last week but it has been ongoing for some time and our users may not be logging jobs since they can power off and back on again and it is fixed.




Computers affected have been running

Windows 10 Enterprise 1709

Windows 10 Enterprise 1809



All computers have McAfee Endpoint Security but that application does not have any hints in their logs either.

Removing or replacing Mcafee is a difficult option and since the issue is not repeatable and so intermittent, may not prove anything.

Problem: Windows 10 reverts to blank screen immediately after displaying lock screen. What's happening?

I have Windows 10 Pro running on a laptop, docked with desktop extended over two additional monitors. Power management set to leave computer on but turn display off after 10 minutes.

Steps to reproduce:

Begin with laptop powered off.

Power on the laptop, leave long enough for power management to turn screen off.

"Wake" laptop by moving mouse or pressing a key.

System behavior:

Laptop display briefly displays lock/log-in screen (not more than a second or two), but screen then goes blank/black. At this point, laptop remains powered, but seems unresponsive to keyboard input. On some occasions, the mouse pointer will be visible on
the monitors, on other occasions not; in either case, all displays are off/black/blank - no desktop, no lock or log-in screen appear on any of them.

Recovery:

Have been able to recover by pressing power button (put computer to sleep), and then wake computer from sleep. Upon waking, lock/log-in screen displays as expected, long enough to allow log-in. Have observed that this may require more than one attempt (waking
from sleep intermittently exhibits the same problem behavior).

If user login is performed promptly upon start-up, this problem does not occur (once logged in, can allow computer to power off displays, and upon resuming, the desktop appears as normal (not configured to display a lock screen).

Hi,

Most of time when I press the power button, after few seconds, black screen appears with the mouse pointer.
Hard Disk indicator flashes continuously, no changes and no error message on the screen.
Even no change, if I press Alt+Ctrl+Del. It remains same till the time I do not press Reset button or I do not restart.
When I press Reset button, only then it comes back with Windows Log in page.

I did ...

• double check the hard disk cable connectivity,
• clean boot and
• even windows re-installation

but still the same problem.

Please help me to fix this issue.

 

Black Screen, only the mouse pointer will apear

I have an Alienware computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. I downloaded and did the install for Windows 10, however on one of the reboots after about 75% install, the computer will hang up and only display a black screen with a mouse pointer. After letting
it sit for over an hour and multiple waking's by shaking the mouse, nothing more will happen. Several failed attempts to reboot, it always hangs at the black screen, and pointer. Could not launch in Safe Mode, and was only able to do a system restore by sheer
accident. Restore disks would not load, and I was starting to panic. Was finally able to restore to Windows 7. Anyone have any ideas hoe to get past this bump in the road so that I can at least try W10?
