  1. After update, computer keeps rebooting and wont let me do repairs.

I have a Gateway computer with Win 10 operating system. I had problems previously with Windows updates and long story short thought it was being caused by my HDD so I bought a SSD and did a fresh install. Everything was going swimmingly for the last few months until last week when the computer told me I had updates to install so I went ahead and told it to install the updates and shut down. The next morning, I started it up and went to get a drink. When I returned expecting the computer would be restarted it was doing a "checkdisk" and after it finished it has just kept booting to the windows logo where it just beeps and boots again and again.

It would not let me into repair menu so I installed my install USB and tried to trouble shoot but when it booted up it said "it looks like I was in the middle of an upgrade was I sure I wanted to continue." so I said yes to get into troubleshooting. It couldn't repair, find a restore point or do anything but let me do a fresh install. Reset this computer wasn't an option. It wouldn't let me go to the previous build. I can get to the command prompt but other than that and a fresh install, it wasn't allowing me to do anything.

Now I feel like I've become pretty good at reinstalling Win10, this isn't my first dance, but I am tired of losing all of my installed programs. In the old days I could just put in the disk and install them again, but with all this online downloading of programs that doesn't work and when I tried in the past to reinstall Microsoft Office, Adobe programs and a few other editing programs they tell me I've already downloaded and installed them on my limit of computers.

I've done everything I could find so far on this site short of doing a fresh install because quite frankly there must be a way for me not to lose all my programs again. I've pulled all the files and images off the hard drive already just in case, but there has to be some way of undoing this and restoring my computer back to where it was.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    :)

  3. Windows 10 Computer (orginally 8) keeps rebooting to install updates

    Hi Christopher,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    I understand that your computer keeps restarting because of updates and I will be happy to answer your query. Let me ask you;

    • Which security software is installed in the computer?
    • Do you remember making any specific change in the computer prior to the issue?
    • Are you referring to an update or multiple?
    This could be due to several reasons and to diagnose the issue, I would suggest you to try the steps below and check;

Step 1: Remove any external devices connected to PC (except mouse and keyboard)

Step 2: Disable security software and check.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software,
you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step 3: If you are referring to multiple updates, I would suggest you to try installing 4-5 updates at a time and then try restarting the computer.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

  4. After update, computer keeps rebooting and wont let me do repairs.

Your computer needs to be repaired. Error: 0Xc0000185

    Hi,

Thanks for the update and response.

Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair scans your PC for the problem and then tries to fix it so your PC can start correctly.

If the issue persists even after startup repair I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

You will have to use Windows 10 installation media to follow the steps to boot into Recovery Environment and try to rebuild BCD.

Step 1: I suggest you to create an installation media for
Windows 10 using the media creation tool:

Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool

Step 2: After preparing the installation media, insert it hard reboot the device and follow the below:

    • Boot into Windows Recovery Environment using the Windows 10 installation media.
    • Click on Repair your computer.
    • Click on Troubleshoot and in the Advanced options.
    • Select Command Prompt. Type the following commands into the prompt and press Enter key after each command.
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /scanos
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    5. Restart the computer.

NOTE: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hope it helps. Reply to the post with an updated status of this issue for further assistance.
