Windows 10: After update kb5040427 installed, "Type here to Search" no longer works.

After update kb5040427 installed the windows "Type here to Search" no longer works. Typing text in that search box neither finds apps or documents on my computer. Further, when I uninstall kb5040427 the search box works again. But of course, eventually kb5040427 will install again, and when it does, it causes the search box not to work. Then I uninstall again, and search works. Search no longer working in bottom toolbar

I used to be able to type a filename in the Cortana/Search box in the bottom toolbar and would be given the option to open the file location or the file. following a recent update this no longer works - it only displays Internet explorer suggestions. Any ideas anyone how this can be fixed?

If you already used your keyboard on different devices and the same issue happened, then basically, the main issue here is the keyboard itself. There's a possibility that the keyboard is defective or it has a bad driver.

We suggest that you try these steps and see if it helps:

Step 1: File Signature Verification Tool.

• Press Windows key + R to open the run command.l
• Type sigverif.exe and press enter.
• Check if you see a list of unsigned drivers.

Step 2: Scan for hardware changes.

• Press Windows key + R to open the run command.
• Type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
• Expand computer and highlight the extension.
• There will be an icon to scan for hardware changes right below
  help.

Step 3: Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.

• Press the Windows + X, and click on Search.
• Type troubleshooting and select Troubleshooting.
• Click on Hardware and Sound and select Hardware and Devices.
  
• Click on Next to run the troubleshooter.

Step 4: Update keyboard driver.

• Click the Start button and enter Windows Update.
• In the left pane, click on Check for Updates.
• On the Select the updates you want to install page, select the drivers you want to install.
  

Once done, check if the same issue persists and try using different keyboard on the same PC you used. If everything works fine using a different keyboard, it means that the first keyboard is defective.

Typing in the search bar no longer works (Fall Creator's Update)

A corrupted operating system is one of possible causes why Windows search is not working properly. To isolate your concern, kindly answer the following:

• When you say "I can't open a simple command prompt", are you not able to access the Command prompt when you press Windows key + X?
• Have are the specific troubleshooting steps that you have done so far? Have you tried SFC scan and DISM?

According to some users who have got stuck in Windows search not working after Windows 10 Creators Update or can’t type in Windows 10 search box malfunction, the missing language bar may the culprit, causing the Windows 10 taskbar search problems

1. Press Win + R to open the Run command.

2. Copy or type the command "C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe" in the Run box and then click Enter to bring back the language bar.



Then the language bar should be back and you can type in Windows search, Start menu, Cortana search and use them to find Windows 10 apps as normal as before.
