Windows 10: After upgrading graphics card, Windows 10 no longer boots properly

Discus and support After upgrading graphics card, Windows 10 no longer boots properly in Windows 10 Graphic Cards to solve the problem; Pegatron has gone out of business I think , which maybe why no further Bios Updates, but not sure if OP is on the latest? or if there were any bios... I looked, but didn't spot anything on an HP site. Google shows some third-party sites that have BIOS updates available. Whether any of them are legit, I can't say. (If the site requires that you install their download manager to get the file, I'd give it a miss.)

I suffered a very similar problem to this when I upgraded an older PC from a series 7 GeForce to a Series 8. There was some step change with the 8 that my BIOS didn't recognise. The PC was the same generation as yours. The solution was to get a BIOS update from the manufacturer. It just depends, however, as to whether your manufacturer has offered such an update. Incidentally, we always used to consider a BIOS update as the last step in trying to get a system working, becuase of the danger of a failed update ~ which can literally turn your PC in to a doorstop if it fails. If you can not find a solution to this, then I would consider trying a series 7 card in the PC, since it seems to have been the series 8 upwards that have caused the problems. If a single series 7 works, then you could always get a pair and put them in sli mode?

  3. With AMD Catalyst and Nvidia all that is no longer true since about Catalyst 12.1 or 13.1 on AMD and I don't know when with nvidia . I've installed both drivers many times and nvidia again a few days ago for a new Bf1 beta driver without removing the old ones like before .

The new AMD Catalyst and Nvidia installers here remove the old drivers for you before they put the new ones in been that way for a good while with AMD Catalyst but sure you can remove the old drivers first if you wish .

Exactly updated and hacked bios are like hens teeth on HP PC and a hacked BIOS or any BIOS flash has a risk factor .

I have 3 HP PC in use (5) total ,2 broken or retired if you count the 6 core ,6 yr old one that fried it's mainboard last week and the faster new one in my specs and the HP P4 rig from the Pentium 4 dark ages I bought new then no longer in use in the storage bld. and this brand new test mule /driver in my spec.

I told the OP almost the same thing and suggested GTX 680 that will more likely work in his PC and will play the new games at 1080p ** real well . We have an nvidia G Force GTX 680 playing the BF1 beta and the newer games and sims real well at 1080p** in an 2011 HP Pavilion P6 -S.B. Core i7 .

7 series nvidia cards won't post in the P7 PC but they may in the OP's PC with enough wattage with the 9 series cards not usually working at all .

Again The 7 series and up cards will not post at all in my HP P7 PC even with the 650W PSU in there without a new mainboard and if I upgrade the P7 GTX 680 d/GPU it will have to have a newer aftermarket mainboard if you can still find something decent for a S.B. Core i7 that isn't used or NOS *really

Those HP Pavilions and P6,P7 and some newer OEM PC often wont go above 6 -7 series Nvidia cards and 6 series on the P6 his problem IMO is either insufficient wattage or moreover likely the usual tattooed HP custom OEM BIOS conflicting with that card that may fry a mainboard voltage regulator or melt down eventually ,hose his OS ,corrupt his HDD or something if it stays in there because of all that . The OEM PC is trying to spit it out when it's loading and he ain't getting the clue . *really

d/GPU either work ,post and load windows correctly with the correct BIOS on both ends ,patches and drivers or don't and if they behave like that one it shouldn't be in there and it may at a minimum hose his windows OS and maybe his mainboard like that also .a lot of the newer cards are UEFI only or cross complaint which can be problems with a legacy MBR bios or UFEI depending on the Card and mainboard BIOS version ,mainboard restrictions , compatibility etc which on an older p6 or P7 or other HP series PC and certain other OEM BIOS and OEM mainboard is very unlikely anyway.
HP and other OEM are notorious for not updating mainboard firmware for plausible upgrades even if they update them at all .*really

Thats very odd I a have brand new 2016 HP Haswell Core i5 desktop with an HP 2B2C Pegatron OEM mainboard in it in my specs I'm using right now ....maybe nobody told HP ,Asus (Pegatron parent co.) that Pegatron $1.93.43 B mkt. cap went out of business

  6. Have you considered presumably if the OP enables an MBR /CSM legacy BIOS /boot on an OEM UFEI /GPT configuration he will have to use diskpart and clean out the GPT partitions and re initialize and format his HDD or SSD for MBR /NTFS and reinstall his OS and data ......or are you talking about something else or just turning his PC into a doorstop or something I don't know or is OP PC CSM legacy BIOS now and I typed all this for nothing ? . *sarc

  7. That's what it is on my 2011 SB Core i7 HP Pavilion P6 PC here upgraded with an 650w PSU and GTX 680 and g27 wheel and real outboard sound in the game/ music room beyond that you need an aftermarket mainboard and a PSU in any case beyond an HD 6450 ,the CTO options or something like that, end of story ,case probably closed . *really

Apparently not , just what I read on another Thread about similar issues with a Gateway OEM MB.....

Yes I thought as a joke I'd try and turn his PC into a Doorstop ........ not funny ? my bad.... *Smile

OK seriously ....turning on CSM in a UEFI enabled bios with the correct options will allow Legacy hardware to initialise.... it is why CSM (compatibility support Module) is in the UEFI Bios.

Yes but if it is in FULL UEFI Mode it may not initialise the 970 , you may need to enable CSM in the Bios , it may not be on by default, and enable Legacy Mode for PCIe Devices .....assuming your Bios has these Options being an HP.

This may not be the issue of course ? and if Secure boot was also enabled with a Full UEFI Bios then you won't get into the Bios except form within Windows either.

  11. thanks good to know I'm a UFEI /GPT newbie with this PC in my spec. and don't know a lot about it other than how to convert an MBR to GPT and vs versa with diskpart and Drive manager and a little about the vid card ,OEM mainboard compatibility/incompatibility I experienced and read about and otherwise I am just a too long since DOS/Win 3.0 and AT clones half azzzed PC enthusiast up to 4 win 10 PC's here now *really

Is a GTX 970 a legacy device? Seems unlikely.

I don't recall whether CSM is turned on in my X79 box. I didn't have to do anything special to install a 970.

After upgrading graphics card, Windows 10 no longer boots properly

No sure 100% but I have ready many issues about them and UEFI Bios's but Company's like HP/Lenovo whitelist their hardware too , eg I tried changing a mini wifi card in a lenovo but the bios wouldn't recognise it as it was not a lenovo part no# (it was intel) . With UEFI the Whitelist is in the Secure Boot Keys etc , so disabling Secureboot and enabling Legacy should get it going....

WARNING **** hopefully that doesn't screwup the Windows installation********************

found this article at HP about it finally

I beleive it is more about whether the GFX card is UEFI GOP ready if Fastboot is enable, if not you get blackscreened at boot usually and it may not boot at all. The basics below or search UEFI GOP..

  14. Ain't that the truth ? They even do it with CPU you can't go (even plausibly ) above the max CPU wattage for same family CPU tattooed in the BIOS either or the CPU won't work at all ......probably to protect the min. spec OEM config. mainboard VR's and the rest of it .*really.

ppfffttt...... and then there is the no go on anthing above 6 series nvidia d/GPU in a lot of HP with legacy BIOS , the aftermarket 650w PSU not withstanding and my S.B. Core i7 HP P6 /GTX 680 (now) is just like that too and an AMD 125 W same or - same family CPU wont work on a 95 watt HP OEM mainboard either and an Intel Core i7 2600 or 2600K Core i7 - 95 watt CPU wont fly on an configured for max 66watt > Core i7 2600s CPU HP -mainboard /BIOS either .

ppfffttt...Don't ask me how I found all that out *sarc

Yikes. I had no idea about "whitelists" used by OEMs.

Makes me glad that all of my desktops have been homebuilt since 1997.
