    After Win10, HP desktop will not wake up from sleep

    After an upgrade to Windows 10, my HP Compaq 6005 Pro Small Form Factor will not wake up properly from sleep. After sleep, if I press a key on the keyboard or press the power button, I hear the fan and hard drive start up, and the monitor goes from completely off to on yet black. (I can see a small difference, and the monitor reports that it receives a signal.) But nothing happens, including when I press various key combinations such as those which would cause rebooting. Sometimes my mouse pointer is visible but usually not. If so, the pointer will not move. If I hold down the power button, killing the power supply, and the press the power button again, the computer wakes up (not rebooting) to the condition it was before.

    As a history, this machine had a clean Windows 7 install, then a Windows 10 upgrade, then a Windows 10 clean install.

    [I have a vague memory that the computer originally went to sleep and woke up OK a few times, and now doesn't. However, my memory could be wrong.]

    I have tried:
    * all Windows updates
    * using HP website for all relevant updates, including BIOS
    * display adapter (graphics card) update
    * Windows Power Usage Troubleshooter
    * turning hibernation off and on again in the command line (powercfg /h off and on)

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    :)

    Windows 10 sleep mode wake up

    When waking up from sleep mode, HP desktop does not come on with full brightness! How do I get this come on at same brightness it went to sleep?

  3. Windows 10 sometimes does not ask for password on startup

    I have the same problem. When my HP X360 wakes up from sleep it will ask for my password every single time. On a cold reboot though it boots straight to the desktop without asking for a password.

    The PIN system is troublesome as well. When enabled it correctly asks for the PIN after every wake-up from sleep. After first reboot though it refuses to recognize the PIN. The settings show the PIN as still being there. I am running Creators update.

    After Win10, HP desktop will not wake up from sleep

    I don't now how to help you but will suggest for when you get if fix, turn off sleep and hibernate. My DVD player froze in sleep and when I googled for a solution there were freezes everywhere I googled, TVs, Computers, DVD players, etc. and no solutions that I could find. After that I turned off sleep in every electronic device I had. I had to pry open the tray to remove a hard to find movie and toss what was left of the DVD player in the trash.

    In computers turn it off in the power settings then in the advance settings also.

    Welcome to TenForums, kimock!

    I hate to sound like a broken record here because this has come to my mind it seems 3 or 4 times in other threads over the last week, but have you tried disabling Fast Startup? Tutorial by Brink here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html

    Word Man: Thank you for the advice. I disabled fast startup, and unfortunately this did not resolve the problem.

    Also, I disabled hybrid sleep (on a subsequent test), and this did not help. However, it did change how the computer restarts after a failed sleep, and this may offer a clue. Previously, when hybrid sleep was enabled:
    • I clicked 'sleep'
    • computer seemed to sleep
    • quick press of power button leads to power (HDD spinning, etc) but a black screen
    • long press of power button leads to:
    • full boot, including the HP screen, the black Windows screen with the single blue window
    • No login requirement
    • resumption exactly where I had left it (e.g. which windows and applications are open)
    Now, with hybrid sleep disabled, all is the same except
    6. login required
    7. No resumption; that is, all windows are closed

    It is my understanding that sleep keeps the system state in RAM, which requires continuous power. Hybrid sleep writes the system state also to the HDD, in the event of a loss of power to the RAM. This implies that my computer had been relying on the system state written to the HDD to resume from hybrid sleep (which required the BIOS startup etc). Without hybrid sleep, the system state is lost. In turn, this implies that my RAM is losing power during sleep.

    If this is true, how can ensure power to my RAM during sleep?

    Thanks, all!

    Hi Kimock: You said, "If I hold down the power button, killing the power supply, and the press the power button again, the computer wakes up (not rebooting) to the condition it was before."

    - so if it had really been in Sleep mode, that shouldn't have happened.

    What you're seeing there sounds more like resume from hibernation, as it's not a boot sequence.

    Do you have hibernation enabled? If so, try disabling it.

    After Win10, HP desktop will not wake up from sleep

    dalchina: My understanding of 'hybrid sleep' is, with it, the computer performs both sleep (system state to RAM) and hibernation (system state to HDD) simultaneously, with the latter as a backup. (See this.) I agree: it appears that my machine is waking from hibernation, not sleep. But hibernation is not enabled. Hybrid sleep was. This implies a failure to maintain power to RAM.

    dalchina and others:

    Many thanks for your pointers. I tried everything (I think) at the various links that you provided. Things that I have tried:

    * installed all Windows updates
    * used HP website for all relevant updates, including BIOS
    * updated display adapter (graphics card)
    * Windows Power Usage Troubleshooter
    * turned hibernation off and on again in the command line (powercfg /h off and on)
    * disabled Fast Startup (now switched back on)
    * disabled hybrid sleep (now switched back on)
    * switched the BIOS setting for PCI Express x16 from x8 + DisplayPort to x16 (now switched back on)
    (per Black screen - Windows 10 Forums )
    * opened Device Manager and go into mouse and keyboard properties:
    - unchecked "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power".
    - Checked "allow the device to wake the computer".
    - The mouse was already like this. (Notably, if I use the mouse to wake from sleep, I get the pointer on the black screen.) The keyboard did not have these options. (Old PS2 style)
    - Then, for all USB Root Hubs, unchecked "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power".
    * Did a 'clean boot', in which all non-Microsoft services are disabled.
    * Typed "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" in a cmd window (see Reports, below)
    * Went into control panel>power options>in your preferred plan change plan setting>change advanced power settings>pci express>link state power management >change to off (it was already off)
    * disabled all startup services in Task Manager
    * disabled suspend to ram option in the BIOS

    The problem remains.

    Dear dalchina,

    That statement yielded this:
    The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep Fast StartupThe following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) The system firmware does not support this standby state.
    My processor, according to my Windows System control panel, is an AMD Athlon II X2 B28 at 3.4 GHz. Oddly, that is not listed at HP's webpage. I just bought this machine second hand, and the seller listed it as an AMD Athlon II X2 B24 3.00GHz.

    Many thanks.

    Hi, this document appears to show that processor (faster) was never fitted..
    http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF....Fc04123349.pdf

    I can't say how significant that is.. maybe worth a little research.

    If you have a disk image of when you had Win 7 installed, I would suggest going back to that to check if sleep worked then.. unless you are sure it did. I.e. that your system supports sleep properly and there isn't a hardware issue.
