Alienware x51 Black screen with cursor while installing Windows 10

When installing windows 10 my computer restarted and it's now a black screen with a cursor. I'm not sure what to do I tried doing things like pressing Ctrl+alt+delete but it doesn't do anything, And if I can is it possible to revert back to windows 7? I've also tried restarting it a couple times but it shows the same black screen and cursor.

    :)

    Windows 10 upgrade

So bit the bullet and updated to windows 10. Now all I have is a black screen and cursor on 1 of my screens. Doesn't give the option to go into bios etc.

Alienware x51 r2 standard apart from running 2 screens.

Tried unplugging etc either screen no change. Can't even get into repair to go back to factory setting.

Tried things others have suggested but no change just get a black screen with cursor???????

Yes they do. There's been an open beta program available to anyone and everyone over the last few months where they could download and install W10 over a bunch of different builds to test it and provide invaluable feedback. For those of us who did test it to provide as much info on issues and bugs as we could value comments like these very highly. We're glad we spent the time to get such praise.

    I have solved this issue.

Hi, I had the same issue with my X51 R2 with a GTX 750 in it.

It seems there's a mixup with the Nvidia card and the on-board Intel 4600 graphics.

I had a spare monitor and plugged in the Intel HDMI port and behold, Windows 10 was there with the rest of the setup procedure waiting for me! So Windows 10 had switched to the integrated Intel card even though I had a GTX card.

Maybe just switching your monitor cable to the Intel might be sufficient or usage of a second monitor is preferred.

Anyway, once on the desktop, it was a matter of reassigning displays 1 and 2 correctly, setting number 2 (Nvidia) as the main and only display, effectively disabling number 1 (Intel).

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

    B.

  7. my x51 doesn't have a separate output for the integrated graphics, so I have no idea what to do to reenable the discrete graphics.

If you are getting stuck the way you say it sounds like the install is hung up. During both of my installs, clean and upgrade. The screen went blank with cursor for about 3 min.
I would try a clean install and do all of your homework to be sure you have the most up to date drivers form go. If the computer is over 3 years old I would check your BIOS as well. Might also want to see that fast boot is turned off in BIOS.

Hope that gave you a good place to start. : )

One more thing to keep in mind. Dell or Alienware, same thing, have special procedures for this upgrade. I would do your homework 1st.

Something that will help me to help you is... What is the model # of your computer and do you know if it has on board graphics linked with a video card? That will make all the difference in the world. I'll help you, give you your model number, and all of the info you can on your computer.

I'm not hearing anything from you so I'll be a nice guy and check back later. I know I can install Windows 10, with minimal ERRORS for ya. The ball is in your court now. This might take some time commitment from you. You let me know. Good luck : )

  12. I had the black screen/cursor scenario when updating one of my machines. It was just a matter of waiting whilst it did its thing and then it rebooted again and the screen came back up and continued normally.

Alienware x51 Black screen with cursor while installing Windows 10

THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH WINDOWS 10.

Below is a Microsoft Knoledge Base entry from April of this year.

    httpw://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3055414

"The lock screen in Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 might appear as a black screen with a mouse cursor
    Symptoms

When you sign out of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 and return to the lock screen, you might see only a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor. Pressing the Alt+Tab keys or the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys has no visible effect.
    Workaround

If you are experiencing this issue, follow these steps to sign into Windows:

At the black screen, press the Ctrl key once on an attached physical keyboard. (You won’t see any visible change, but pressing the Ctrl key will place the cursor in the password box that you’re currently not able to see.)

Now type the password of the user that just signed out and press Enter. This will sign you back into Windows and the desktop will appear.

If you failed to sign in because you mistyped the password, press Enter once more. Then retype the password and press Enter." ...

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INSTALLING WINDOWS 10. AFTER ENTERING YOUR PASSWORD, THE CURSOR SHOULD VANISH FOR SEVERAL MINUTES WHILE WINDOWS COMPLETES THE INSTALL SETUP. MY COMPUTER, A FAST ALIENWARE, TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE SETUP AND THEN THE WINDOWS 10 DESKTOP APPEARED.

All you have to do is let your comp boot to the black screen, once you see your icon (mouse pointer) then hit the CNTRL key once, even though you do not see it, the password box is now up and you type in your computer password and hit enter, immediately your icon will disappear. Give it about 3-5 minutes and your comp ill come up. Here's the issue, the alienware x51 and other models believe that there are more then one display attached to your comp and unfortunately it is defaulting a phantom monitor as your main screen, reason you see black is because you are stuck on the "login" screen but just cant see it. Once you do this you are in! Here's the thing, once you are in you have to change your display settings in control panel in order to shut off multiple monitors and default your monitor as primary or you wont be able to see anything when you open it as it will be on the "phantom screen". You can do this very easily by opening control panel and hovering over the icon for it on your bottom task bar, then right click and click "move" then move the screen from left to right, it sounds hinky but it works! Once you get the control panel screen in front of you now you can change your display and all will be perfect! This takes a total of 5 minutes and will work!
