Windows 10: All data from Drive D:/ disappeared or is not recognized

Hello everyone

I am using a ASUS ROG laptop with two drives: a SSD "C:/" called "OS" and a HDD "D:/" called DATA.

After uninstalling 4 or 5 games from my laptop (properly, using the Applications list to uninstall), all my games, music, pictures, etc stored on drive D (DATA) suddenly looked to have disappeared. Steam is still working but all games show as uninstalled, Origin isn't even working at all anymore, all my music, videos etc can't be found and played anymore.

When trying to play a mp3 from "recent files", it says that drive D is not available and the file can't be found.

Drive D is still visible and can be opened but it appears almost empty, which shouldn't be the case. I think all my data is still there but can't be seen. I can still see all my Origin and Steam games in the Apllications list. It's like the data is not available or recognized anymore. The laptop runs fine (fast, no weird noises, no system error).

D drive shows unallocated and empty after Microsoft technician try to add space to d drive

I have less then 15 GB space left on D: drive of my desktop, so I contact Microsoft for help. I ask will my data will be safe if we merge c and d drive so the technician said yes and try to take 30 GB from c drive and add to the d drive. After partitioning
30 GB technician wasn't able to add it to d drive and in the process disappeared from file explorer and now my d drive is also showing unallocated. She tried bringing it back but didn't help then she tried sometime called point but then my desktop restarted
and she already left. All my data and personal filea photo everything was in that drive so I want it back.

Hi, try this:
1. First check your disk:
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and make sure D: is reported as good.
If not, do not continue, and post back .

2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk D: /scan

This will not fix anything, simply report the state of your file system.
Post the result.

Is D: one single disk, or have you created any partitions on it?

Hard Disk Sentinal says my Drive D is in perfect condition, no further action required.

Basically Drive D seems to work fine, it is visible, can be opened, I tried to create a new folder and delete it, it works.

But so many things disappeared without reason (all Steam games, Origin + games, music, pictures, videos)

 

Ok, now we know your drive seems fine, try a data recovery program like Recuva.

This has two scan levels- the normal scan (try that first) and deep scan (longer) - try that if nothing is found by the first.

Note that we repeatedly and strongly recommend people use disk imaging routinely- this creates a set of compressed images for Windows and any combination of disks and partitions.

Thus you can restore Windows, a disk or partition to a previous good state,
Eg. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for image sets.
There are several other such programs: Macrium is exceptionally well supported and reliable, but its GUI is less immediately friendly than some others such as Aomei Backupper or Easeus To Do products.

 

You can use Recuva software to try recover deleted data.

 

Some recovery tools (and I don't remember if Recuva is one of them) have trouble recovery directory structures and recovery all files in one directory. Active File Recovery did not have that problem (in my case). It cost about $70 last year but I was recovering something like 20,000 files and hundreds of directories (nested several levels) so was worth it.

 

Just a thought: The OP should first check whether the folders/files got hidden mysteriously. Folder Options>view > Show hidden files and folders. If the files are indeed hidden, he has to unhide those.
