Windows 10: All Icons are missing!

    All Icons are missing!


    When I turned on my PC today, I wasn't too happy to find that everywhere on Windows 10, desktop, taskbar, file explorer, etc, had no icons whatsoever.

    Before I turned off my PC I hadn't done anything with registry or whatever that could possibly cause something like this. I just worked on it for an hour or two, then turned it off.

    For more details, The Start menu is perfectly fine, and all labels for shortcuts and files on my desktop are still there, same for file explorer. Only the icons are missing. When I try and enter properties for anything, the window never appears for it.

    First, I tried to troubleshoot it myself by clearing all iconcache files in C:\Users[usr]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. I then restarted explorer.exe and... no dice. Then, I ran Microsoft Safety Scanner 1.0.3001.0, and it couldn't find any files that were infected after scanning for ~6 hours. So I don't believe it's a problem with malware, either.

    Is there any way I can bring them back other than just reinstalling Windows 10? Thanks in advance. All Icons are missing! :)

    Hi Donna,

    Corrupted applications are the possible causes why your program icons are missing after an update. To isolate your issue, we'd like to clarify a few things:

    • When you hover your mouse over your taskbar or Start menu, are you seeing the icons for your apps?
    • Have you tried searching for a specific app and check if it will appear on the search results?
