Windows 10: All my desktop icons changed positions. How to I set them back?

All of my icons on my desktop swapped positions so now they are all in different locations than they were before. Is there any way for me to have them reset to the positions they were in before? I also don't just mean the icons for stuff that comes included with Windows 10, but also icons for things I added myself like folders and shortcuts. I also can't just rearrange them back to the same position myself since I have enough things that I can't remember the exact position that my icons were in before. So I was wondering if there was a way to access the 'history' of my icon layout and restore

There are various reasons why you're experiencing the issue. Let us isolate your concern by enabling the
Auto arrange icons option, and then disabling it to see if the issue will persist. To do this follow these steps:

• Go to the Desktop screen, and then right click anywhere.
• Hover your mouse on View.
• Select Auto arrange icons.
• Restart the computer.
• After restarting the computer, check if your Desktop icons are still in the right position after clicking the
  Auto arrange icons option.
• If your Desktop icons are in the right position, repeat steps 1-3 to disable the
  Auto arrange icons option.
  
• Customize the position of your Desktop icons.
• Restart the computer.
• After restarting the computer, check if the issue will occur.

1. to crosscheck, can you confirm Auto Arrange Icons is not checked (rt click desktop, view).
2. can you experiment with the settings from rt click desktop, Desktop Icon Positions, manually saving and restoring positions, and Automatically restore icon layout on resolution change

Seems we need a bit more info to find the right direction.
Meanwhile, further searches might yield an alternative.

Note that the article I cited said this:
I could not get into Bags\1 - 'Error on opening' message but I could get into permissions which I reset including the 'owner' tab.

So it might be reasonable to suggest that if this was not true, that solution might not apply.
So did you not a permissions issue at all?
