Hello there, I recently had to format my HDD, I had to insert an HDD from a completely different PC because the original one seemed to be Corrupted and affected Performance, after the Formatting ended I noticed a noticeable Performance improvement, However, Everytime I try to use Third Party Softwares that require to modify specific folders, Like Steam and Epic Games, I do get disk errors, at first I was worried that the disk was corrupted, but none of that at all, it turns out the Steam folder was marked as read only, upon removing and executing as Administrator it worked, However I did notic

How to remove the Read-Only checkmark for "Documents" folder?

ALL my folders seems to be in read-only, not only the checkmarks [IMG]

    1. The Documents folder normally has its Read-only attribute set. This in no way interferes with file operations. The attribute has a different meaning for folders --- it serves as a flag to tell WIndows to process the desktop.ini file. This is how folders acquire custom icons.
    2. You misunderstand the gray square that is displayed in the Read-only checkbox in a folder's Properties dialog. That checkbox is not a status indicator --- it's a tri-state switch. The gray square (default state) means "no action will be taken." This is just piss-poor design on Microsfot's part. When I was an MVP and attended a Summit, all the MVPs told the Shell team nobody used the checkbox & it confused everyone. They chose to ignore us in this regard.
    3. If you receving error messages when attempting to save files, check Permissions and Controlled Folder Access.
    4. The best way to see what files & folders have their Read-only attribute set is to add the Attributes column to a Details view.

    Read only folder

    Hi Jim,

We appreciate you for being part of Windows 10.

Before proceeding, we need more information to help you better.

    • Do you want to change the permissions to certain program/folder?

    • Have you signed in through Microsoft/Local account?

A read-only file is protected from accidental deletion and changes to its content.

Step 1: What is a read-only file or folder?

A read-only file is protected from accidental deletion and changes to its content. To change a file to read-only, right-click the file, and then click
Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the
General tab, and then select the
Read-only check box. To make changes to a read-only file, clear the
Read-only check box, or save the file with a different name.

Step 2: Prevent changes to a file or folder (read-only)

Setting your important or personal files to read-only can help protect them from unintentional or unauthorized changes. When a file is set to read-only, it cannot be changed.

    • Right-click the file or folder you want to set to read-only, and then click
      Properties.
    • Click the General tab, select the Read-only check box, and then click
      OK.
If you need to make changes to the file or folder later, you can turn off the read-only setting by clearing the
    Read-only check box.

I hope the above information helps. Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with this issue. We are glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
