  1. All of my external sata drives are showing up as GPT Protective Partitons

I recently backed up all of my data on a trio of 4TB sata HDDs; one from WD, one from Seagate, and one from HP. Today, I plugged the hard drives into a toaster and was met with GPT Protective Partition in Disk Management on all three of them. Tried a different toaster, same deal. Tried a different computer, same deal. Why is this happening, and how do I access the data on these drives again?

EDIT: Just tested a 3TB drive I backed up a long time ago and it's also reading as GPT. The chances of four HDDs suddenly corrupting is near impossible. This has to be a Windows issue, right?

GPT Protective Partition. Moved 6TB SATA drive from Windows 7 64 bit to Window 10 64 bit

    Hi

I hope someone can help me.

I have a Western Digital Black 6TB SATA hard drive that has been formatted as a single large partition with GPT on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. It is not a boot drive.

I want to move the drive to different PC which has 64 bit Windows 10.

However, on the Windows 10 PC's Disk Management console, the drive is showing one partition as 2049GB GPT Protective Partition, and 3541.03GB unallocated. Thankfully, when I put the drive back in the original PC, everything still works fine.

I've read that the GPT Protective Partition can happen when moving from 32 to 64 bit systems, but both of my systems are 64 bit.

The motherboard on the second PC is an Asus P5K-E/WiFi-AP. It's BIOS drivers are up to date although the most recent release was in 2009. The motherboard's manual shows that the SATA connectors are Intel ICH9R. I have run the Intel Driver & Support Assistant
and this suggests there are no software updates available.

Using the app "Drive Controller Info", it shows shows that "Standard SATA AHCI Controller 10.0.17134.1" is being used. I believe this is a standard Windows driver, and this is apparently up to date.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?

    Many thanks

    David

SATA internal HDD and external SATA HDD

using a USB makes it a external drive to the system. suggest that you do some research on USB vs SATA.
