  1. Allow Regular User to install software, but not access my other account

We're gonna lend this pc out to a bunch of friends so they can "try out gaming", so we don't want them to access our private files on our actual account.

Thinking back to Win98ish days I just made a new user account, made it Regular, and then try to set permissions so he can still install things but not actually change User account settings which would enable a drunken friend to change our password and things on main account.

I don't wanna use any of this microsoft account signin nonsense.

How do I do this. I've tried everything that I can think of including giving permissions in the advanced settings of rightclick C: drive.

I have 2 drives, C: and D:, I'm ok if they can only install to D: and not C: (but they can install to C: too, I don't mind, as long as personal files in the other acc's personal folder are safeguarded and they cannot access other account)

    It's win10 home version

    Thank you for your time!

  2. Installing Applications to Select User Accounts

    Hi Lucas,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are trying to avoid the access of all the application in all users. We will help you try resolving this issue.

I suggest you to check while installing any software it gives an option to install on all users or any particular user only.

However this would be application specific to manufacturer.

You can try following the below steps also and check if it helps.

    • When you install the software or an application, it makes a shortcut or copy to the public folder where all the users can access the application.
    • Open C:\ Drive and select Users.
    • Select Public, select the files which you don't want to be used by other users and delete the files or Cut and paste in Admin account folder.
Note: To perform this steps be logged into Admin user.

Keep us posted to help you better.

Settings can't be opened using the built-in administrator account

    Hello,
Unfortunately I have the same issue as Dabz from upgrading win7 to win10.
I've tried opening settings using all the suggested methods and it will not load using my account with Administrator access nor the built-in Administrator profile. I also tried other methods not listed such as using Run. Control panel is just a stepping stone to add users in Settings.
I'm also having explorer.exe issues, which I believe is preventing Settings from loading.
Using cmd (Admin) I successfully created a new user profile [and granted admin access also using cmd (Admin)], however win10 will not allow this account to log on. win10 does not list this new user within control panel but it does in the start menu. win10 will not allow to log in or switch to the new account via the start menu either.
I can access settings in Safe Mode but this will not allow me to create a new account.
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Allow Regular User to install software, but not access my other account

Creating a user account that does not allow downloads

My mother downloaded a virus to her computer. I want to prevent this from happening again so I want to create a user account that does not allow downloading of anything.

From what I read, a Standard account will not allow any type of downloading or installation.

However I was able to download and install Windows Essentials while logged into her account. Why is this?

Someone suggested the following. Would this work?

Where do I access Security Policy?
