Windows 10: ALT+TAB shows the Taskbar as an application in the open applications list

On my Windows 11 installation when I use ALT+TAB to switch between open applications I weirdly also get the taskbar listed as an open application:When I try to close it the taskbar application i get the following shutdown screen:

Cannot access applications from taskbar or ALT-TAB

Since my update from Window 8.1 to 10 it occurs that I cannot access my applications from the taskbar or switch between applications using ALT-TAB. The strange thing is, that (a) the effect of a window appearing/disappearing is visible in the taskbar,
but the window does not show up on the rest of the screen, (b) it occurs only in about 50% of the attempts and (c) it becomes evident when particuar programmes (e.g. a browser (any) or MS Outlook) are opened, (d) clicking several times on the same icon in
the taskbar sometimes helps.

 

Windows 10 Not Showing Open Applications in Taskbar and Can't Switch Using Alt-Tab

Hi All,

I performed a recent Windows 10 Update, and since then, for some reason, it appears that some of my open applications are not appearing in my Taskbar. I am also not able to switch between the open applications by using Alt-Tab.

For example, about 2-weeks ago I was using Skype, when I was prompted if I wanted to use the Windows 10 version; to which I agreed. I liked the new UI, so I pinned it to my Taskbar. Up unto about 4-days ago when I did my last Windows Update, it resided
quite happily in my Taskbar and I was easily able to switch to it using Alt-Tab. I can no longer do this.

Similarly, for Windows' picture viewer. I had a number of pictures open in different windows, yet none of these are viewable in the Taskbar or accessible via Alt-Tab. I can only see these by minimising other windows, yet when I ultimately minimise its
window, I seem to have 'lost' that window / application.

Strangely, Outlook, Excel, Word, my browsers etc. are all showing and working fine, so right now, it only appears to be Skype and the picture viewer that I'm aware of. I have changed the colour of my Taskbar just in case it was clashing etc., but that too
did nothing.

Select Desktops to Show Open Windows in ALT+TAB in Windows 10


Am I missing something. In 10 Alt+Tab no longer switches between the desktop and open applications. You need to perform an extra step to get to the desktop
