Windows 10: Alternatives to High Contrast

When web developers came out with web pages originally, they used eye-friendly gray backgrounds. Windows, like Mac at the time, allowed for the screen color to be set to various colors, including gray. I could never figure out why developers started setting backgrounds to bright white and why consumers were willing to stare at a light bulb. Most probably did not know they could change their backgrounds.

Then Windows got rid of the options to set background colors and replaced it with an information-destroying high contrast. Those who want to use accessibility options have to choose between not seeing highlights, etc. or suffering from eye strain. Those with visual problems are deprived of highlights in Excel and Word and various other bits of information.

I have avoided MS browsers because the high contrast translates over. I have been using Chrome with accessibility extensions that show colors but have a milder background color. Now, Chrome has started translating over the annoying MS High Contrast settings and seems to have removed the option to block it since it can no longer be shut down in the 'flags' section. So I have to wait on my computer to shut that down just to browse the web.

Are there any alternatives to High Contrast? Some kind of software to install that has some eye-friendly backgrounds that do not destroy other colors? What about a browser that blocks Microsoft's irritating high contrast and allows for better accessibility extensions?

File Explorer Selective High Contrast mode

Hello Kacson, my name is Paul one of the community experts. I am sorry that you are having issues with your visual settings that is stuck in High Contrast Mode.

Kindly try these steps to check if it can resolve the issue.

Way 1: Turn High Contrast off via keyboard shortcut.

Press left Shift+left Alt+Print Screen to instantly turn it off.

Way 2: Turn off High Contrast through changing the theme.

Step 1: Enter theme in the search box and click Change the theme in the result.

Step 2: Choose a new theme from the offered themes excluding the High Contrast themes.

Way 3: Turn High Contrast off in High contrast settings.

Step 1: Type high contrast in the search box and tap High contrast settings in the result.

Step 2: Click the High Contrast theme (i.e. High Contrast #1, High Contrast #2, High Contrast Black or High Contrast White), choose None in the pop-up list and then hit Apply.

Follow these steps on how to turn high contrast mode on or off in Windows:

• Type "high contrast settings" in the search box, and then select High contrast settings from the list of results.
• Under Choose a theme, select a high contrast theme from the drop-down menu, and then select Apply.
• To turn off high contrast mode, select None from the drop-down menu, and then select Apply.
• To turn high contrast mode on or off from the sign-in screen, select the Ease of Access button in the lower-right corner and choose High Contrast.
• To turn high contrast on or off from the keyboard, press left Alt + left Shift + Print
  Screen.

Click in the High contrast list box

Choose None
