  1. Am able to access/share some drives between PCs, but not others??

I am trying to access drives (D:\, E:\ etc) on my Win10 Pro (home use) PC from a PC running Win7.

Oddly (seems to me anyway) if I select the Win10 desktop from the Win7 PC network page, I can open it and access/copy/edit/save files. Same with one or two other paths, such as 'Users' and 'My Documents'. But if I try to access any of the Win10 drives, I get a notice saying something like 'Windows cannot access \\MS-PC10\d" and says I do not have permission, which I need to obtain from my Network Administrator (whoever that might be!).

The only difference I see is that when I open the Properties windows for the XP10 Desktop and D drive is that the latter, under the sharing tab, has the 'Share' button greyed out. The same properties/sharing tab for 'Desktop' has an accessible 'Share' button (which takes me to the Network Access 'Choose People to Share With'; window). The Advanced Sharing options in the two Properties windows look exactly the same (with 'Everyone' in the box) - and so are the permissions, all checked to allow.

I hope that I have explained clearly enough. Anyone know how to fix this, so that I can access all locations on the Win10 PC, not just some? (I don't have any issues accessing any part of the Win7 PC from the Win10 one BTW).

    Thank you.

    :)

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

  3. Cannot access shared network drive

I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

Windows 10 - Mapping Drives on Older PC

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To assist you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps, please reply with the following details:

    • Are you able to access the shared drive?
    • What is the Network Error message that you receive?

We can try some troubleshooting steps and see if that helps in resolving the issue:

    Method 1: Accessing Shared drive

I would suggest you check if you are able to access the Shared drive. To access the Shared drive you can use
File Explorer to navigate to the Network location or you can use the IP address along with two backslash in the Run box. i.e.
    \\192.0.0.1

If you are unable to access the shared drive, please follow Method 2.

Method 2: Resetting permissions for the Shared drive

You can configure the permissions again for the Share drive and see if that helps. Please refer the section

Homegroup removed! How to get network sharing work with Windows 10 v1803.

Please reply with the status of the issue, we will be glad to help you further.
