Windows 10: AMD announces 3rd Gen 7nm Ryzen CPUs in 6, 8, and 12 core models

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today again made technology history with the announcement of high-performance 7nm-based computing and graphics products that are expected to deliver new levels of performance, features and experiences for PC gamers, enthusiasts and content creators. During the first-ever Computex opening keynote, AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su announced:

The new “Zen 2” core widely outperforms the historical generational performance improvement industry trend, up to 15% estimated instructions per clock (IPC)2 uplift over the predecessor “Zen” architecture. The “Zen 2” CPU core powering the next-generation AMD Ryzen and EPYC™ processors also includes significant design improvements including lager cache sizes and a redesigned floating point engine.

The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen desktop processor family, including the new 12-core Ryzen 9 processor, offers leadership performance.1

The AMD X570 chipset for socket AM4, the world’s first PCIe 4.0 supported chipset with more than 50 new motherboards at launch.

RDNA gaming architecture designed to drive the future of PC gaming, console, and cloud, anticipated to deliver incredible performance, power, and memory efficiency in a smaller package.

The 7nm AMD Radeon RX 5700-series gaming graphics card family featuring high-speed GDDR6 memory and support for the PCIe 4.0 interface.

Dr. Su was joined by fellow technology leaders Microsoft Corporate Vice President of OS Platforms Roanne Sones, Asus Chief Operating Officer Joe Hsieh, Acer Co-Chief Operating Officer Jerry Kao and a host of other significant industry players to showcase the breadth and depth of the AMD high-performance computing and graphics ecosystem.

AMD also introduced a new X570 chipset for socket AM4, supporting the world’s first PCIe 4.0 readiness, which exhibited 42% faster storage performance than PCIe 3.09, enabling high-performance graphics card, networking devices, NVMe drives, and more. With PCIe 4.0 doubling the bandwidth for motherboards with the X570 chipset over PCIe 3.0, PC enthusiasts can gain more performance and flexibility when building custom systems. The X570 offers the broadest ecosystem readiness in AMD history, with over 50 new motherboard models anticipated from ASRock, Asus, Colorful, Gigabyte, MSI, as well as PCIe 4.0 storage solutions from partners including Galaxy, Gigabyte, and Phison. AMD Ryzen 7 2700E CPU leaked online with 8 cores and 45 Watts TDP

AMD will be releasing a low(er)-power slash more energy friendly AMD Ryzen 7 2700E. This eight-core proc would get a pretty sweet 45 Watt TDP, which obviously means it has a lower base clock and lowered turbos. The processors surfaced in the 3DMark database.

It's not the first time this processor is named or spotted, as ASRock’s CPU compatibility chart has already been listing a Ryzen 5 2600E and Ryzen 7 2700E as well as the Ryzen 3 2300X and Ryzen 5 2500X SKUS. That leak lists a 45W TDP already. I say lists, as ASRock is still showing the 2600E and 2700E info on their website right here, including that TDP.

Today, AMD announced availability of two additional 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor models, 2970WX with 24 cores and 48 threads and the Ryzen Threadripper 2920X with 12 cores and 24 threads. The Ryzen Threadripper WX series commands class-leading core counts, purpose-built for prosumers focused on raw computational power for the heaviest workloads. In turn, Ryzen Threadripper X series provides enthusiasts, gamers, and streamers high performance with a beautiful and smooth gaming experience based on higher base and boost processor clock speeds than the previous generation.

Powerhouse for Gaming & Creating

The 24 core/48 thread Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX processor and the 12 core/24 thread Ryzen Threadripper 2920X processor offer unprecedented multi-threading with up to 39%1 and 55%2 faster multi-threaded performance compared to the Core i9-7960X and Core i7-7820X respectively. Ryzen Threadripper 2920X also offers simultaneous 4K gaming and 4K30 at 40,000 Kilobit per second (Kbps)3 encoding, so gamers can stream their gameplay smoothly.

New Features and Holiday Bundles

Designed specifically for Ryzen Threadripper WX processors, a key new feature is Dynamic Local Mode (DLM) software, which optimizes application performance by ensuring the most demanding threads always receive preferential time on cores with local memory. This feature is automatically configured by downloading AMD Ryzen™ Master on Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX or 2970WX systems**. Without requiring any user input, Dynamic Local Mode:

measures CPU time of active threads;

ranks active threads from most to least demanding;

automatically migrates the most demanding threads to dies with local memory access;

accelerates lightlythreaded and latency sensitive apps without impact to heavy multi-threaded tasks.

When enabled, Dynamic Local Mode results in an average of 15 percent additional performance1 for Ryzen Threadripper WX Series CPUs in select applications, including the SPECwpc™ benchmark and games like PUBG™, Far Cry® 5, and Alien: Isolation™. AMD also plans to open the feature up to even more users by including Dynamic Local Mode as a default package in forthcoming updates to AMD chipset drivers.
