  1. AMD Athlon CPUs on W10

I have a client who had an issue after upgrading W10. These are the specs: HP Pavilion p6754y Magnesium Gray Edition Desktop PC Product Specifications | HP®Â*Support

We had a problem with performance. TM showed CPU usage was in the 90s. After a lot of working msconfig, I got it functional. Here's the thing, that CPU has the needed clockspeed. Yet when I got to his house we had screen flickering, icons not appearing, almost unusable because of how sluggish it was. We talked about a CPU upgrade. Now I'm trying to find out if that's even necessary or if it's simply not compatible with W10. Does anybody have an idea as to why this would happen? It's not a 3rd party application causing it since Windows services, when running, seem to cause problems. I'd like to find the best solution possible before acting on anything. What does everyone think?

    Thank you in advance!

    :)

    AMD Athlon CPUs on W10

To start with, yes that CPU should run windows 10 no problem. It really isn't that old compared to some of the other CPUs that I have seen run Windows 10, but I did double check the datasheet and it supports PAE, NX, and SSE2. The datasheet is here:

    AMD Athlon II X4 640 - ADX640WFK42GM / ADX640WFGMBOX

I have had several problems on a few machines (most notably dual core machines) with runtime broker (peek in task manager and see if it is one of the things hogging the CPU). If so, it can be fixed by going to Settings->System->Notifications & Actions and turning off "Show me tips about windows" (several others reported this alone fixes the runtime broker issue, I turn off the 4 options below it as well). Also somewhere in the forums (I can't seem to find the article I was reading) several users also reported 2 other processes hogging system resources, which were both related to migrating data from your old win7 OS. They said running cleanmgr to wipe the windows.old file should solve this problem. Personally I would do a clean install though, I had some odd behavior upgrading from windows 7 (for instance when booting, it took much longer than the preview, it would boot to a black screen, play the win7 startup chime, stay black a bit longer, then display the win10 logon screen). Check those things out and report back with your findings! *Biggrin

CPU itself is quite enough to run W10 properly but integrated GPU is slow. It's a legacy product as far as AMD is concerned and not properly supported with drivers in W10.
Couple of other things to check. Is it running on all 4 cores ? In "msconfig" > Boot > advanced options, see if the box with Number of processors is checked and 4 is displayed, Maximum memory unchecked.
How much RAM is in it ? less than 4GB can put a crimp in performance significantly as it is also shared with GPU.

  6. I have it all clear. Problem now is that Windows cannot successfully update and that the Windows store rapid closes every time you try to log in or download any applications.

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Mostly for a lark, I put 10 Home X64 on my old Compaq CQ50-105NR laptop. It has an Athlon X2 QL60 CPU. All went well, but I ended up with an exclamation mark for "co-processor". The newest chipset drivers I could find for the nVidia chipset in the laptop were for Win 7. I extracted them, and manually installed them from Device manager. The exclamation mark went away.

This is not to convey the message that I know what I'm doing, and it may not help solve the problems with the machine.

The only red flag I see in the link is the onboard AMD graphics. I dimly recall driver issues with that. I can't see how that would produce your symptoms, though.

One possible solution: do a clean install of Win 10 on the machine. As you've already activated the upgrade on it, a clean install on the same hardware will activate. Painful, but it might work.

Clean install, i.e. New partition? That was my next step. Here's the big question: how do I get a FULL iso for 10 (read: a legal one). I'm not a pirate, but I have a lot of clients with 10 related issues and it will be needed many, many times whether 10 ends up being the next XP or the next ME.

    Windows 10

This is the Media Creation Tool. It has a variety of options (immediate upgrade, create boot media, download an ISO).

One option for the ISO is for a version that includes both the 32 and 64 bit upgrade packages. (Won't fit on a single layer DVD.)

Unfortunately, I believe that you have to download separate versions for Home and Pro. That would be further complicated by N and KN versions, if you had any international clients.

    Another place to download:

    Tech Bench

As far as I know, the ISOs from the two sites are identical.

    And entirely non-piratical.
