AMD Radeon Mobility 5xxx and Windows 10 just NOT working with me !

    Hi everybody,

I am not able to get my AMD Radeon mobility 5730 to work with windows 10. I just upgraded from windows 7 professional yesterday and I've been at it since then. I've tried many fixes that I found on the internet and NOTHING works. So I am almost about to rollback, unless I solve this thing (I have too much work to do and I have no time for these problems).

    The problem :
    ---------------
    - I get the black screen while installing drivers for my graphics card. I've tried many versions, from the latest : 15.8 (beta) all the way done to the drivers for windows 8.1. Yes, that includes also the versions : 15.7 and 15.7.1
    - The only way that I can get into windows 10 is after I use the AMD CLEANUP UTILITY. After running this, the device
manager shows me only : 'MICROSOFT BASIC DISPLAY ADAPTER' and I can work on the laptop.

What I've found out so far:
    ------------------------------
While installing the drivers, which are supposed to be compatible, the screen just goes BLACK and I have to do a hard reset in order to be able to work, or PLUG MY TV IN through the HDMI port. So then I end up with a picture on my TV, while the laptop screen stays BLACK.

Going into safe mode and going into the device manager now shows that windows recognizes the : MOBILITY RADEON 5000. The problem however is, that it doesn't make any difference, since I am still stuck with the problem.

Am I destined to just go back to windows 7 ? To be honest : it's ridiculous that I've been working on this for the last 2 days, without getting any work done.

    Anyone know a solution ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Lex

    :)

Thank you Erdeslawe, at least I now have a better understanding albeit no solution to the problem.

I've looked at the hp site which you mentioned and it is one I've looked at before. Basically, it tells me that hp will not (might not) be developing new drivers for my 'aged' laptop, and it seems that neither will Microsoft be coming up with anything either.
That means that I'm being forced to use other systems eg for photos instead of those I'm familiar with. like it or not. Alternatively, I could revert to Windows 7 but I feel that that would be a retrograde step in the longer term.

I can't understand the attitudes of either organisation in this matter. There must be thousands of 'aged' computers in use that would justify the development of new drivers and whether it be hp or Microsoft someone needs to do something about it, I feel.

Let's hope that in the not too distant future remorse will set in or an independent will develop appropriate drivers which will be acceptable to both hp and Microsoft.

Thanks for your comment albeit not a problem solver.

Windows 10 black screen with mouse pointer after login screen

It will, check this driver from AMD: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/mobile?os=Windows+10+-+64

Under Supported Products, it says "AMD Radeon™ HD 7000G Series" which also means your HD 7520G

In my experience, Windows Basic Adapter means that Windows Update can't find a driver for your video chipset, so it installs this generic one by default. I had a similar problem with an older laptop with an Intel video chipset. Worked fine in Win7 but Win10 could not find any driver for it. I gave up and went back to Win7. Not every Win7 machine can be upgraded to Win10 successfully -- regardless of what the Win10 Compatibility Appraiser tool tells you.

Thanks for your reply Mark ... I just learned that it's possible to do a clean windows 10 install after upgrade as well... I'm wondering though if I should, since I don't want to run into the same problems. ... Any idea?

  6. A clean install erases the contents of the partition and reinstalls Win10. All of the data, settings, and applications are gone.

While it's POSSIBLE that a clean-install, since it's not retaining or reusing any existing drivers, actually MIGHT find the right driver for your video chipset and install it ... however ... Windows Update is supposed to find the right drivers anyway -- and since WU didn't do it, my guess is that a clean-install won't do it, either.

I just went back to windows 7 ... after 3 days of fooling around with all kinds of combinations of fixes, start up sequences and more, I decided that the problem is simple : the AMD drivers and Windows 10 are just incompatible and it's all not worth the headache ...

Don't panic! First confirm the exact model of your graphics card with a utility such as Aida64. Remember that mobile models frequently require different Catalyst installers than their desktop counterparts. So I would first try to find a Windows 10 driver for the mobile model, not the desktop, or a Windows 8 driver if 10 is not available. In worst case I would try to manually update the driver with the desktop counterpart model without running the AMD installer and see what happens. As for the monitor, you might have to go to Device Manager, after you have successfully installed the graphics driver, and change (update the driver) to Generic PnP monitor. This could help with the black screen.

So go ahead, determine the exact model of your graphics card and then find drivers for it.

Beware: Some notebooks have dual graphics cards! One Intel for general display and an AMD for 3D graphics. Check with Aida64 if you are in this case. Needless to say you must also install the Intel driver!

No panic here spapakon , just annoyance. I don't think that using aida is necessary, since I already know what card I have - namely : AMD Radeon mobility HD 5730. The drivers I've tried all list this card in the compatibility list. It is just not working. I've tried all versions, from 15.8 (beta) all the way down to the windows 8.1 drivers.

Well, let's make sure you downloaded the correct Catalyst version. As I said before, this is DIFFERENT for mobile and for desktop AMD graphics cards. So, go to AMD's site, select Drivers+Support, Drivers+Download Center. Then go to the Manually select your driver section. Since you have a notebook, the correct choices are Step 1: Notebook graphics, Step 2: Radeon HD series, Step 3: Mobility Raden HD 5xxx series, Step 4: Windows 10 64-bit. Now go to Step 5: Display results. Download version 15.7.1 and try installing it. If you get a black screen, connect your TV and go to Device Manager. See what the monitor is. Try changing it to Generic PnP monitor. Also try switching the monitors by pressing the key combination (in some notebooks it is FN+F5, yours may vary) and see if you can get a picture at the notebook monitor. As a last resort load Catalyst Control Center and check the monitor section. You may also need to install a utility to activate key combinations, see notebook's site.

Ok, I have decided to give it another try and I found out something new. The problem of the black screen has to do with the brightness setting. I started raising the brightness on by using the Function keys and suddenly the screen popped up.

Now I am left with a brightness problem, namely : the brightness cannot be adjusted. The screen brightness stays fixed, but when I lover the indicator on the brightness bar, the screen will go completely black when it reaches a certain point.

I have now tried installing all kinds of version of the driver once more, but the problem persists. Once I uninstall all AMD drivers however, the brightness adjustment levels work fine.

    Any idea's ?

To adjust the brightness go to Control Panel, Power Options and click Change plan settings. Then click on the Change advanced power settings. Go down and you should find the screen settings. This is valid for Windows 8.1, I hope it is not too different for Windows 10. Also you may have to install some utility to enable the key combinations, check notebook's manufacturer site.

Same problem in the power options. Whenever the brightness goes lower than around 75%, the screen goes black. Above that point doesn't make the screen brighter either ... Seems as if it's static. I'm going to try some things and once I find a solution then I will post it here ...

If someone else has any fixes for this, then, in the mean time, please let me know ...

    Hi there!

I face the same problem and was very happy with your findings so far.

I have a ASUS laptop/notebook with a AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series Graphical Processor. I ran Windows 7 Home previously and chose to update to Windows 10. Installation ended in a black screen and rebooting didn't help. I get a Windows logo for about 5 seconds and then the laptop screen turns black. I was very happy to find out that an external screen works without issues.

I then installed the latest Catalyst software (AMD-Catalyst-15.7.1-Win10-64bit) and it indicates that I have the latest drivers installed. However, the problem still persists.

I read your post and changed the brightness. As in your case, my laptop screen suddenly becomes alive when the brightness is 75% or higher and goes dark if it's below 75%. When starting up, I still need to hit the external display key (F8) and the brightness key (F6) a couple of times.

I will also try to find a solution for the remaining issues. It might take a couple of days (or more). I'll keep you informed if I discover something relevant.

Good to hear that it, at least, worked out somewhat for you too ... Right now I am just adjusting the brightness level through the catalyst control center. There is a brightness slider under the 'my built in displays' and it is the only that I found working. Until there is a fix I will just be using the system like this.
