Windows 10: an activated win 7 I upgraded to win 10. it does not like the key

I have an old laptop that I bought new with windows 7 home premium. I downloaded the win 10 upgrade from Microsoft. I ran the upgrade and it worked just fine. However it says not activated. I went to system and stepped through entering the original microsoft key that came on the laptop. It still does not work. Any ideas?

Win 7 Activation Key & Win 10

First I would re-install Win 7 and make sure that it is activated. Then upgrade to win 10. If you are activated you do not need to use a key anymore. You may have to use your key for Win 7 to get it activated.

 

Activation problem after upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10

OK I did the test

From OEM (bios) activated Win 7 Pro VM (to emulate a notebook) - I de-activated it by uninstalling the product key

• Turned off networking
• Upgraded to Win 10 Pro ( it asked for a key and wouldn't accept the generic Win 10 retail key - it did accept a Win 10 MAK)

Once installed

• Ran slmgr /ato and got this - as expected

Then went to Change Product key and entered the generic and got this:





So it activated locally providing DL but with this in the diag report

So we are in grace/notication period but activated

Pertinent error as noted above being




Then with WAN established it deactivated




I had to change product key again to a Win 7 OEM COA key and it then activated with a generic Win 10 OEM digital licence






Conclusion... network access is the root cause of the error (as it says on the tin) so that's what has to be established...

hey all,

just got a hp mini from ebay, came with win 7 starter key. installed and entered the starter key as it won't let me upgrade to win 10 unless I activate win7. I've received error message that my product key is invalid for activation. So it wont let me upgrade
to win 10 until i activate win 7 but it won't accept the product key for win 7 and activate it. Anyone got a fix for this? I'm a nurse and really need a working computer rn.
