An attempt to create a Recovery partition on z partiton on the /d: trashed all the data on...

It started as an interesting observation: a recovery partiton is neatly located on disk 0, partition 3. So if something would happen to the disk, the whole thing would be lost, while the recovery now is neatly allocated itself 450 mb on /c: drive. What can be simpler? - let's move it to /d: to separate those on another physical drive away from /c: to keep it safer - the /d: is meant to store all those valuables, right?

So, starting the own help wizard in Windows "Create a recovery drive" from start menu search, returns a nice selection of a pendrive and the /d: drive, with a neat message that the drive "must be able to hold at least 16gb and everything on the drive will be deleted". Fine. Let's shrink some off the /d: to have a neat secure partition for a recovery and call it Z.

Recovery drive wizard actually sees the /d: the freshly formatted /z: and the random 7gb pendrive with some files. Happily select the empty /z:

    >>> voila! All data for last 7 years on /d: is now gone, thank you very much.

This is how it looks now, while I'm running some random disk recovery software on the background.

The /Z: drive I've created has been already mashed, however the /D: is still visible:

So is it just me finding this very ambigious or is it a horrible bug (that just trashed my carefully selected memories for last 6-7 years)?.

If it MUST BE a usb flash drive - why does it see a mechanical /d: and its partitions???

If it MUST BE a usb flash drive - this may have been made clear - that one can not use any other drive but a usb and standartised it (as there are screenshots with varying requiremets, "at least" 16 or 32 gb of data.

I assume this is a bug, where there's confusion between physical disks and partitons.

Thanks for a lovely QA Sunday.

    :)

    How To: Create recovery partition.

it worked when i copied all the files of the disk to the recovery partition i created, but i had to use WinPE tab to add the entry.

    Type: WIM Image (Ramdisk)
    Name: Recovery
    Path: Z:\Sources\boot.wim
    and hit Add Entry
I tried it in VirtualBox and it worked.
At first, it would add a second "Windows 7" entry to the list, but when the installation is finished, the old one is deleted. (I formatted only C: partition)

    How To: Create recovery partition.

For awhile I had been wondering how to create a recovery partition to reinstall windows without the need do find my thumb drive or disk, or hell burn another. With that in mind i figured others would also like to know. Therefor I have created this Video (720P processing of vid can take upto 30min from orig post date stamp, quality will improve) and thread on how to create a BASIC recovery partition to install/repair a windows installation using a new or existing hard drive. Without the need to buy software.
