    USB ports not functioning properly

    Hi,

This can be due to a recent change in the configuration of your device. To assist you with your concern, we recommend that you use Device Manager to disable and re-enable all the USB controllers. This lets the controllers recover the USB port from its unresponsive
condition. The USB controllers represent the USB ports in Device Manager.

To disable and re-enable the USB controllers, follow these steps:

    1. In the Search box, type Device Manager and press Enter.

    2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Note: You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.

    3. Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.

    4. Repeat step 3 for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    5. Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB

    controllers that you uninstalled.

    6. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

Let us know if the solution above works for you.

    USB port not working

I have an HP Pavilion dv6604nr laptop. I have 3 USB ports, 2 located on the left side and one located on the right side near the power supply port. For some reason, one of the USB ports on the left hand side will not recognize anything that is plugged
into it. I have done all the steps and suggestions that is posted on this site, and still can't get it to work. The message I get is "The last USB device that was connected has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." It shows in the Device Manager
as Unknown USB Device(Port Reset Failed). When I have a USB device plugged into the non-working port, it shows up in the Devices and Printers folder, but the device does not work. I am at my wits end. Can anyone help me or suggest any other things to try?
Oh, I am running Windows 10 pro.

    USB ports not working properly

If, you haven't, you may want to install the chipset drivers. Here, under the "optional downloads" tab, "South Bridge Driver".

Also, that external drive... is it powered by a power supply or the hub?
If it is powered by (an internal or an external) independent power supply; try un-plugging usb cable from the computer usb port. Turn it on and let it power cycle on, then, plug it into the usb port.

If it is hub powered, it may be the port being not able to supply the correct current for the drive using usb 2.0.

If it is a usb 3.0 drive that is hub powered, then the above may be the problem, if you are trying to use a usb 2.0 port to power it, as usb 2.0 spec is to supply 100mA max to a unit, which, may request up to five units for a total of 500mA; where as, usb 3.0 (with the correct cable) will supply 150mA per unit, which, may request up to six units for a total of 900mA max.

You can, also, try this: Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows from Welcome to the Fix it Solution Center
