An unexpected error occurred during system restore (0x80070002)

24 hours of frustration in to this issue*Mad
it appears that my laptop updated on the 10th as I see a restore point but it ran out of juice around this time and after recharging it now won't boot I just get the blue screen with rotating dots.
By powering on and off several times in quick succession the auto repair runs but that does not fix the issue, if I select advanced options after auto repair I get the options...
continue and exit to Windows 10 - simply boots to the blue screen again
    use a device - I don't have a usb or recovery dvd
troubleshoot - I would prefer not to reset and loose all my programs / apps so advanced options appears to be my only choice.
startup repair does not work for this issue
system image recovery - I don't have a system image file
command prompt - I would need very detailed guidance as I am not an it person
uefi firmware settings - as above (I don't even know what this is)?
so I was left with system restore but unfortunately all restore points fail and give me the error in the title*Sad
    Please help
    thanks
    Simon

    :)

Unable to backup on windows 10, error message "Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

    Hi Greg,

The second attempt at a system restore gave me the message 'System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

    Details:

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070002)'

I will try another restore point.

    Regards, Steve

  3. Laptop locks up from Anniversary update

I found this message prior to my post and Method 1 put me in my current situation. I don't think it completed successfully, as noted in my post. The restore fails and displays this message:

A unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x80070002)

Sorry forgot to mention this laptop was an upgraded Windows 8 - I tried the see more recovery options "go back to previous build" but that fails too - "we ran into problems and won't be able to take you back to your previous build try resetting your current build instead" as I said I would prefer not to lose all my installed programs.

Sounds like your only choice then is a Windows Repair Install, you will not loose any of your personal files or apps.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Download the Windows ISO from Tech Bench ....

Thanks mike but it appears a repair install can only be run from inside Windows 10 how do I do it if it won't boot?

You could try this method ...
If your PC won't start and you haven't created a recovery drive, download installation media and use it to restore from a system restore point or reset your PC.
    • On a working PC, go to the Microsoft software download website.
    • Download the media creation tool and then run it.
    • Select Create installation media for another PC.
    • Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
    • Follow the steps to create installation media, and then select Finish.
    • Connect the installation media you created to your nonfunctional PC, and then turn it on.
    • On the initial setup screen, enter your language and other preferences, and then select Next. If you're not seeing the setup screen, your PC might not be set up to boot from a drive. Check your PC manufacturer's website for info on how to change your PC's boot order, and then try again.
    • Select Repair your computer.

You would make this on a Flash Drive or DVD whatever that computer will use....

An unexpected error occurred during system restore (0x80070002)

    No luck
i downloaded and run as described above however when I click repair computer the screen shows 2. Options troubleshoot or turn off pc.
after clicking troubleshoot I get reset this pic or advanced options...
reset is the same as advanced options on the pc - I will lose my programs
advanced options - system restore does not offer any options I get a pop up window saying to specify which Windows installation to restore and to restart the computer
system image recovery - another pop up - Windows cannot find a system image on this computer
start up repair - I get message start up repair couldn't repair your pc
command prompt - ?? I would not know what to do
go back to previous build- message - we ran into a problem and won't be able to take you back - try resetting your current build

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

  9. WSR shat the bed bad on this one huh?

Best you can do is try running Startup Repair, hopefully this is an issue with your Boot Manager and/or System Drivers. If they can be repaired and you can enter Windows, that's great.

If it doesn't, I would cut your losses and re-format. You're going to lose any data still stored locally on the machine but at least you'll be able to boot into Windows again. When you are back into Windows you'll immediately want to run backup, a good disk imager like Macrium Reflect Free or a snapshot program like Rollback rx should do the trick.
