Windows 10: An update from Microsoft on disabling VBScript in Internet Explorer 11

In early 2017, we began the process of disabling VBScript in Internet Explorer 11 to give the world the opportunity to prepare for it to be disabled by default.

The change to disable VBScript will take effect in the upcoming cumulative updates for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on August 13th, 2019. VBScript will be disabled by default for Internet Explorer 11 and WebOCs for Internet and Untrusted zones on all platforms running Internet Explorer 11. This change is effective for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 as of the July 9th, 2019 cumulative updates.

The settings to enable or disable for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11 will remain configurable per site security zone, via Registry, or via Group Policy, should you still need to utilize this legacy scripting language.

Disabling VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11

VBScript is deprecated in Internet Explorer 11, and is not executed for webpages displayed in IE11 mode. However, for backwards compatibility, VBScript execution is currently still permitted for websites rendered in legacy document modes. This was introduced as a temporary solution. Document modes are deprecated in Windows 10 and not supported at all in Microsoft Edge.

To provide a more secure experience, both the Windows 10 Creators Update and Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer-April 11, 2017 introduce an option to block VBScript execution in Internet Explorer for all document modes. Users can configure this behavior per site security zone via registry or via Microsoft Easy fix solution. Enterprise customers can also configure this behavior via Group Policy.

Recommended Actions

As a security best practice, we recommend that Microsoft Internet Explorer users disable VBScript execution for websites in Internet Zone and Restricted Sites Zone. Details on how to configure this behavior can be found in KB4012494.

We also recommend that web developers update any pages that currently rely on VBScript to use JavaScript.

In subsequent Windows releases and future updates, we intend to disable VBScript execution by default in Internet Explorer 11 for websites in the Internet Zone and the Restricted Sites Zone. The settings to enable, disable, or prompt for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11 will remain configurable per site security zone, via Registry or via Group Policy, for a limited time. We will post future updates here in advance of changes to default settings for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11.

Staying up-to-date

Most customers have automatic updates enabled, and updates will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have automatic updates turned off, will need to check for updates and install them manually.

An update on disabling VBScript in Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 10

Beginning in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, we intend to disable VBScript execution in IE 11 for websites in the Internet Zone and the Restricted Sites Zone by default, to provide a more secure experience. This change was initially announced in a blog post in April. The new default behavior can be previewed beginning with today’s Windows Insider Preview release, build 16237.

For customers on previous versions of Windows, we intend to include this change in future cumulative security updates for Internet Explorer 11.The settings to enable, disable, or prompt for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11 will remain configurable per site security zone, via Registry, or via Group Policy, on released versions of Windows. We will continue to post updates here in advance of these changes to default settings for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11.

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?

Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).
