  1. Anniversary Update - Here It Comes!

Crap! I see "update to Windows 10, version 1607" is available, and will be installed on my computer tonight! Which means, tomorrow:

    1. I won't be able to disable the Lock Screen. I will be forced to look at a "pretty picture" before I will be allowed to log on to my own PC.
    2. Virtualbox will no longer run. I will not be able to run any of my VMs until I can get some kind of fix from Oracle.
    3. I will no longer be able to disable my touchpad. Whenever I am trying to type anything, my cursor will be randomly jumping to different places on my screen.
    4. I will no longer be able to access SD cards on my computer. The Card Reader will no longer work.
    5. My camera will no longer function.
    6. I will no longer be able to have NumLock on by default when Windows starts.

Who knows what other problems I'll discover in the morning. And I have no way to prevent this from happening. Microsoft will force this on my machine, then will do absolutely nothing to help me solve any of these problems. To me, this just doesn't seem right. This is not the way a large, respected American business would treat it's customers.

Is there any advice you can give me?

    :)

[French Cortana] Bug when it comes to use the Here+ drive

    Hi,

Last week-end I had to go somewhere, therefore I tried to use Cortana to find the way, using Here+ Drive.

So I asked "Emmène-moi au palais des congrès antibes" (in english it is: find the way to Palais des congrès in Antibes)

So, it recognize well what I said, but when it launched Here+ drive, Cortana told me "Obtention de l'itinéraire vers Antibes Invest". (Finding the way to Antibes Invest)

Antibes Invest was not far away from "Palais des congrès" but that is not the exact place.

And so I had to launch Here+ drive myself to put the search query in the field, and then it found the good place.

    Thanks

    1) you can auto login to avoid this.

    2) vb runs fine - there is a issue with latest Insider version affecting some people but not most.

    3) This depends on the touchpad drivers.

    4) SD card still works fine

    5) this issue only affects some users - again a small minority.

    6)Not true.

A more serious problem is that you may lose access to drives or they may have RAW format casing possible data loss. I've deferred upgrading until this bug is fixed. You can only defer upgrades with the Pro version.

Most of the problems you described have either already been fixed or only affect a minority. I would not bother that much, you might just be lucky and everything works as before the update.

  9. OK, turning off 'rant mode'.
#1 - I want the login prompt, I just want to skip the 'pretty picture'. Win10 version 1511 allowed this.
#2 - I think this was just because I didn't have latest version.
#3 - I have spent days looking for this, and couldn't find a driver that worked.
#4 - After version 1511, after a day and a half, I did find a driver that fixed this problem. Hope it works on 1607.
#5 - Truth: I never tried my camera. This is just what I've read while researching other problems.
#6 - Are you sure? I couldn't find it. If you could give me a reference, I would really appreciate it.
My story: Anniversary update caught me by surprise. Download ran for hours, during which my PC was unusable. Installation took hours more. When I saw all the problems it caused, I spent a lot of time trying to fix them. I was successful on a few of them. (VB in particular) Eventually, I gave up. I restored my system from an earlier backup, and crossed my fingers. The 1607 update hasn't happened yet, but I dread when it does.

Thank you for your cool-headed reply. Much appreciated.

I had the above update downloaded & installed a hour or so ago. Is this the latest version? As usual, it took ages to DL on my "up to 4Mbps download" connection.

Yes. If you want to be sure you are up to date you can look at the update history here..

Yup, I was under the impression that WU downloads a delta from the existing installation (i.e. not the full CU) which should be faster but D/l'ng & installing the CU itself is quicker it seems... NB: No installer for this one at present .. Cab's installs with Dism (just an FYI)...

  13. Anniversary Update - Here It Comes!

Oh, and another thing, Windows 10 has something called 'Auto-Tuning'. When the Anniversary virus gets installed, this feature reduces your internet access to a crawl. Most pages won't load at all, and the ones that do, take MINUTES. I really wish Microsoft would stop making these 'improvements' to my PC.

(See: "Fix Slow Internet After Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Here's How | Redmond Pie" for possible fix.)
