Windows 10: Anniversary Update ~ Homegroup Gone!

After the anniversary update my Homegroup sort of thinks it has gone. If I check the settings, it says ( on all my PC's ) that there is a homegroup to join but I am not currently in a Homegroup. But ... the Homegroup is actually still active. Files and so on are being shared. I am not completely sure what is going on, has anyone else encountered this issue?

The homegroup is lost on the Primary computer and all options take you back to the request for a password to join the homegroup, yet this was the computer that generated the password originally for the homegroup.

All other "Secondary" computers on the homegroup can see each other that have not updated to Anniversary edition.

Suggestions?

After installing windows 10 anniversary update I can join homegroup but other computers in the homegroup are not available. All the computers in the homegroup can be viewed and accessed through the Network folder but not the Homegroup folder. I used the
troubleshooter, it did not resolve the issue. Will a future update fix this?

 

Mine is the same. If I leave the Homegroup on both of my PCs and then create a new HG on the first PC (with new password) the second PC seems to 'see' the new HG but clocks out after entering the new password.

So the PC essentially see a HG but cannot talk to each other.

Networking can still see other computers on the network and it asks you to sign in with the other computer's login. As long as sharing has been set up I assume it can work that way.

 

Doesn't work. Both PCs have sharing set on for files, documents, printers, etc. Second PC says 'join Homegroup'. Entered password from first PC's homegroup on second PC and second PC times out trying to join.

 

It works just as it did before except the Homegroup is now inaccessible. All of the PC's believe they are outside of the Homegroup and ask if I want to join it. However, without a single PC in the Homegroup I have no idea what the password is, so I have no idea what happens if I attempt to join the Homegroup. But since they all think they are not in a Homegroup its not possible to leave the Homegroup. And they also think there is a Homegroup on the network so they aren't allowing me to set up a new one. It's a mess really.

 

Yes your Home Group will be gone, because Anniversary is a brand new OS, not a Service Pack.

 

So how are you supposed to get the PCs to share files, printers, etc?

 

I think I have found a solution to this. You need to remember which PC the Homegroup was defined or initiated on. Power up ONLY that PC. If you power up any more, then it insists the Homegroup is still there. But if you power up just the one that was used to create the Homegroup in the first place, it says there isn't a Homegroup on the network. You can then create a new Homegroup. You can then go to each of the other PC's, power them up and join the Homegroup. Everything seems to be working again.

OK no I haven't, LOL. Althouth it allowed me to form a new homegroup, when I rebooted all the PC's the Homegroup is empty. It is saying no other Homegroup members are online - even though they are. It seems that at least for the moment the Homegroups are well and truly broken.

 

Standard network sharing is how. All that Home Group was intended for, was so that say a family has all Windows devices. With Home Group, you can let everyone have access to your Libraries, point to point, or not. It also allows another two users to do the same.

Network sharing does not have the limitations that Home Group does. You can set up the shares so that in your User's and Groups for the Advanced Shares, you can put in their username and a password.

It comes down to where people are going to have to start getting a NAS to hook up to the network, so that it allows for more flexibility. Same as having a ethernet or wifi connected printer through the Wifi on your Gateway.

 

The advantage of a Homegroup for me is that I don't need to enter a password every time I access another PC, yet the Homegroup is password protected so it is more secure than a network that has password access disabled. I access my others PC's a lot and don't want to have to enter passwords every time.

 

Also, the second PC on my lan is NOT ID and password protected. My wife does not need to sign on at all. Booting goes right to her desktop. My PC is the only PC ID and password protected.

 

You do not have to enter a password for standard Network Sharing if you check to remember forever or go into your User icon and enter the network credentials for each IP that you wish to connect to.

 

You can still set a password to protect her shares, with a user name just for sharing, not for logging in a user.
