Anniversary update vs virus protection software

It looks like Windows 10/anniversary update is not compatible with ESET32 Node 32 Antivirus or with Kaspersky. What antivirus program do you use that doesn't seem to have a problem with win10/AU?

    :)

Thanks for your comment! I would not like to be hit by a virus before judging that I'm not "comfortable" with my Windows Defender" alone! McAfee is expensive and I would like to make sure that I must have it. I have to protect 2 PCs using for personal
    application only.

    Hi:

AFAIK, KIS/KAV/KTS 16.0.1.445 (e) (released >1 week ago) is compatible with AU.

I'm not sure about KIS/KAV/KTS 17.0.0.611 -- that version might be waiting for patch (b), which is in beta testing and will be forthcoming soon.

I've been running ESET NOD AV since the fresh win 10 install on this new computer. Did the anniversary update when it was available and haven't experienced any problems or incompatibilities between the two at all. What kind of problem did you run into?

Stick with Windows Defender. AU edition is more aggressive than before and it does its job well.

    Hi, @ydaltak:

You mention 2 different 3rd-party AVs.

Question 1: Have you had both of them installed at some point recently?

The reason I ask: Kaspersky (and other AVs) is very finicky about leftovers (especially drivers) from other AVs. If you had ESET NOD AV installed at some point (or any other AV), then it would be very important to be sure it is fully removed, using the vendor's removal tool, if available, BEFORE installing Kaspersky. Even if the other AV is "disabled" or "turned off" the drivers can still create conflicts.

This is true for many AVs.

Question 2: Also, what AV was installed before the AU upgrade?

Kaspersky (and many other AVs and I think even M$) recommends temporarily UNinstalling their AV before performing the upgrade to AU.
If you had Kaspersky (or another AV) installed during the AU upgrade and you are now having performance issues, it might be worth cleanly reinstalling that AV, again using the vendor's removal tool, if available.

Tenforums sticky with list of AV uninstallers

Most of the popular AVs have patched their products to be fully compatible with Win10 AU (1607).
But, if you wish to revert to Windows Defender, that is fine, too. I would just be sure to remove all leftovers of the other AVs.

    Cheers,
    MM

i only had ESET NOD32 installed before AU. this is a new computer and that's the only AV ever on it. i mentioned Kaspersky because i read somewhere (?) that it was also having problems.

i turned ESET off yesterday and there were no taskbar lockups. i'm trying that again today. i will look into uninstalling ESET using the vendor's removal tools. that sounds like a good idea.

i appreciate your sound advice and will let you know what happens next. thanks!

  10. WD came with the new service, it was causing daily BSODs on my mom's computer.
If you are using 3rd party AV, it is better to disable WD completely to avoid problems.

so i looked into removing/reinstalling ESET, but i don't have a license number. it was installed by the business that built my computer in april. and the instructions looked complicated. sooooooooo, i took the computer into the shop with a list of the 4 things that don't work properly. the tech said he hadn't heard of these problems but i got a very early "invitation" to AU and maybe they are problems with W10 that will be fixed in a later update. the only thing he could recommend was completely reloading the operating system again (which means reloading all my software, too) and maybe that wouldn't fix the problem. soooooooooooooooooooooooooo, i'm going to learn to live with the problems (fortunately most of them are very small) and wait and see it a fix is offered by microsoft. crapola, i say. i appreciate all of your comments and your time spent, but i'm just going to get used to it for a while. thanks, again!

  12. Hi:

I would have expected a legitimate computer shop to have provided you with the relevant software licensing information for ESET and any other licensed software they installed (including the Windows OS).
You might have to reinstall the software or rebuild the system some day.
If you paid for the software license, they ought to have provided that info.
If they did not provide that info, it sounds a bit suspicious.

    Just a thought.

In any event, sorry I could not help.

    Thanks for updating us.

    Cheers,
    MM
