Windows 10: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Fast+Skip Ahead Build 17040 for PC

two and three quarter hours to the desktop but I lost about an hour with the failure.

 

I'm not bragging, but just saying, as usual my VM updated without a hitch, and being I have a checkpoint for the last version(I always make one before an upgrade, just like creating an image on the host, before I upgrade it) I am now in the process of cleaning out the windows.old and other upgrade cruft.

 

Oops. Forgot I had to make the ISO.

Anywho, half hour to restart is pretty good time here.

 

Totally weird thing. I only noticed this because I went to My PC to get to my UPPtoISO drive. This is at Restart point where I make my ISO. This partition, the system partition 1 UEFI stuff, had been assign a drive letter! *Shock I didn't touch it, just went ahead and made my ISO and proceeded with the Restart. All went fine and up to 17040 Desktop. Checked My PC again and it was gone! Mega confused!!

 

OneDrive has for me worked on each RS4 version, no problem connecting.....have always Updated and stuck to Defender as AV, along with Malwarebytes free.

Neither have I used another method of backing up other than System Restore.

Also have never needed to disconnect Defender to successfully Update.

I can't change the location of Pictures. It shows up in OneDrive.

 

Right click on those you wish to relocate....there are many options.

 

Was able to change Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos.

Won't let me change Pictures.

Have just noticed you are not clicking on OneDrive.....you are clicking on Pictures.

 

There is a notation when you first start to download the update. There is a separate AMD update happening right at the beginning. But mine is continuing with the install, and is at 20% now. I'll update you when it is finished. Hopefully all goes well...

Afraid Network is broken on this release -- can't connect to SAMBA (Linux) server. I'm running the Insider build as a VM but that's not normally an issue - I always test new releases as a VM before trying on a physical HOST machine. VM sofyware running is VMWARE workstation rel 14 -- perfectly OK - works fine - no problem there so it's definitely a Windows defect.

W10 Pro (non Insider) works fine -- computer name GREYFOX.
Samba Server (running CENTOS 7.2 as NAS server) normally has absolutely ZERO problems servicing clients - including various versions of Windows.

Running latest version of SAMBA with all fixes / updates applied.

W10 Insider -- won't connect and gives weird error message -- done loads of things but can't get the wretched computer to connect to the SAMBA server. This server is where backups run and it serves multi-media streams etc so clients need to connect --it also acts as Internet gateway from my LAN - that way I don't get problems when people use my home internet on their computers !!!.
