I recall being asked, when updating a program or adding a program to the system, if I would like to create a system restore point. No one remembers that? In both 7 and 8?

 

That had to be built in that program's installer.

 

If system restore was not activated, would the program still ask if you would like to create a restore point?

 

I never paid attention to that detail.

 

I thought system restore was a windows service that kept information on your system, in case an update or newly installed program messed up your computer --- you would be able to restore it to its previous state without the new update or program you just installed.

 

It is but a program can invoke it too. Revo Uninstaller has that option before a program is uninstalled but I'm not sure it does it if system restore is not active. Gonna have to try that.

Well I'm miffed the other way. I don't use SR and it's always on after an upgrade including this one.

 

It's not a fuss just a discussion. This laptop I'm upgrading has an AMD CPU so I expect it to take some time. Will be interesting to see that if you have SR on before upgrading and turns out as off afterwards and vice versa.

 

This has been an ongoing topic in every thread titled Announcing Windows Insider (earlier Technical) Preview Build 9XXX and 1XXXX. In every new thread to announce a new build, this is one of the first "issues" our members post.

My sincere recommendation to all complaining about this extra 10 to 20 seconds needed after an upgrade: opting out from Insider program might better suit you.

Think it through: Those who installed the official release 10240 and have never been Insiders have only had one upgrade since that, during the last 11 months. Think if you had not made the mistake to try the Insider builds, you'd now have two or three minutes saved during this time and the life would be much easier *Smile

 

Once every couple of days lately but that's not the point, seen some much more useless discussions. As magilla said, it's good if details like that are worst that can be found. I have my own pet peeves but that would be nit picking.
I had a problem with some settings in Ease of Access not sticking but that got resolved in this last build before I could find answer.

 

Agreed. I can't comprehend the System Restore issue. We should be looking out for bugs and not making them.

The system restore issue might be a bug though? For info, those of you, "high and mighty", I've been an insider from day one. Gone through driver issues, blue screens and reinstalls. Spent hours on the first builds. Things have improved enormously in the last few months. For me this issue is interesting at the moment regardless of how easy it is to switch SR on or off.
