How often does W10 check for updates by itself. I know mine checks shortly after boot up after that I do the manual method.

I believe that this depends from the Automatic Maintenance settings. Twice a day, I think. I've changed the time to a more reasonable hour of the day (in which my computer runs).

    Hi,
    @Joanne:

That's what I would have suggested. Explorer crashed on me too when I tried to access that folder.
Once I took ownership it was fine. It's still a bug though.

Installed without difficulty, this time I had no trouble with the "flight" upgrade and did not have to go the .esd-.iso route (as I had to do to install the last two builds as the flight upgrade didn't work in either case.)

In my case, the persistent files in windows.old are audio drivers. In particular, intcDAudio.sys. It is owned by Trusted Installer so can't be deleted. If you gain ownership and try to delete it it says it is in use. Bit strange as that file is in system32/Drivers so no idea why it isn't being used from there.

Deleting from a boot CD fixes it but really can't be bothered as it appears next install!

    Just a quirk.

    Hi,

These are the Intel Display Audio drivers.
It's simple enough to solve. In Device manager, Sound Video and Game controllers select Intel Display Audio. Uninstall and tick the box that reads " Delete the driver software for this device".
    Leave Device manager open.
Once done delete the drivers in "Windows.old".
Back in Device manager right click on "Desktop......." and let it scan for hardware changes.
Et voila the drivers are back but W10 is now using the proper ones.

O and yes, next update of IP same story again.

    Cheers, *Wink

Thanks for the elucidation. Like I said, I usually can't be bothered messing with it but now I know a better way I might just do it more often!

Yep, the successful upgrade performance is extremely important to them, for the obvious reasons (as most people will prefer to upgrade as opposed to clean installing and having to reinstall/rebuild their installed programs. It would become very tedious for me with > 200 games and programs installed...*Wink) If an upgrade won't work, either through the flight method or upgrading from the .iso, then I just wait wait until the next build that *does* complete the upgrade install successfully.

Thanks for your little blurb about Magician--I just checked it because of your post, and for the first time in many, many builds Magician 9.7.4 properly detects my SATA 3 AHCI setup...! Before this dating back at least 6-12 builds (!) (Well before 1607) Magician would come up and tell me that my AHCI driver was uninstalled--of course it *was installed*, else my EVO 850 would not have booted the system. Until today I had thought it was a Magician software problem--but apparently not, as it seems to be working correctly as of this build.

Now, the test will be whether it will *remain* "fixed" through subsequent reboots. I have seen it temporarily "fixed" before only to relapse the next reboot after a successful build upgrade--and that is what I expect it to do this time. Will sign off and reboot and come back and post the result...

EDIT: Ah, well...it is not to be...*Wink After the reboot Magician is again as always failing to recognize my SATA drives and AHCI settings. Nice while it lasted, though...*Biggrin

EDIT: It looks like a driver signature problem according to the event manager:

"The MagicianSataModeReader service failed to start due to the following error: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source."

Yep, looks like a Magician problem or a driver problem of some kind.

I have same situation with desktop windows.old refusing to be deleted but on my test laptop it was deleted with cleanup routine. Go figure!

    Hi,

If nothing in there is still being loaded then yes, disk cleanup will remove the lot for you.

@Edwin, the only kooky thing I've noticed is the left column of tiles sometimes first displays low, down where the green arrow points. I have to drag the title line up to get it back up top. Stays there, mostly. But sometimes drops back down. Weird.....
