Windows 10: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 15046 for PC

This rather confirms earlier posts I mad that the Slow Ring is not really a Slow Ring anymore but a "Fairly Fast Ring" now. 15042 certainly has not been out long enough to be considered a relatively stable build which was the original ethos of the Slow Ring.

Frankly, I cannot see much point in the Slow Ring now, and I think it is time MS got rid of it and just had the Release Preview Ring for cautious persons and Fast Ring for everybody else (but we get ability to download an iso each build upgrade).

 

The Flash plug-in works fine in Edge..
- you just click on the little jigsaw icon on the webpage and you get a drop-down asking if it's "one time" only use, etc..
- took the screenshot with Snipping Tool and added the graphic in 3DPaint via Wacom tablet, wirelessly connected..


- so all that stuff is working OK.. *Thumbs

 

For me 15046 x64 Enterprise, I had to use Kari's UUP to ISO, method and the no UUP registry hacks did not create the esd, for Windows 10 Pro x64 I had to use the registry hacks to disable UUP got the install.esd. Trying Kari's UUP did not work for Pro. This seems odd.

 

Got it up and running after 2hrs. yawn

And i do wish they'd leave my drivers alone
keep changing them to the wrong ones.

This warning has been posted in this thread, in ESD to ISO tutorial thread, and in UUP to ISO tutorial thread: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 15046 for PC

It is occasionally good to read what others have posted.

Seems that the warning only applies to 64 bit Windows 10 build 15046 upgrade; UUP to ISO is working for 32 bit Windows.

 

Here's a (recent) first: got onto my desktop test rig this morning and the new update was already installed and ready to go. Installing on the Dell Venue Pro 11 tablet right now. Had Settings disappear from display on the latter unit, but can monitor progress by watching Internet and CPU activity. Seems to be going OK so far.

[10 mins later: restarted and got Settings back. At 6% on "Preparing to install updates" but then, this machine is slower than most of my others: i5 4210-Y dual core mobile CPU, 8 GB RAM. Looks like it's going to take a while...]

[7.5 hrs later: my first post-upgrade backup using Macrium Reflect failed. I had to disable other VSS writers in the Advanced Options settings to get the backup to complete successfully. Just a heads-up to others who may have a similar experience.]

I very strongly disagree.

In my opinion (I repeat: just my opinion) Microsoft although normally not releasing ISO images when they release a new Insider build silently accepts the fact that Insiders need an ISO to test various clean / repair install scenarios and so on.

Last time UUP upgrade files did not allow us to create ISO was build 15025, Microsoft released it as ISO only a day or two after upgrade was released. Exactly same happened this time with 15046, they cocked up releasing an upgrade which downloads closer to 10 GB (in my case 2.5 GB in BT folder, 7.3 in SoftwareDistribution, EN-GB PRO x64) instead of normal around 3 GB and did not allow making ISO because of this, hence they released a relatively new ISO.

We have got 8 builds with UUP method, it has worked 8 times to upgrade but failed two times to let us make an ISO. Both times UUP upgrade was released without possibility to make an ISO they have released a new ISO.

I am willing to bet rings remain as before and that in the future fast release of an ISO will be more an exception than a rule.

 

This may be a first for me...the upgrade process under UUP actually seems to be working...as I'm at 50% "downloading updates and climbing". Will come back when I find out whether this will be the first WU upgrade install through UUP that works--had to run the "UUP off" registry settings file and reboot before I got past 0%. Just checked--now at 75% and climbing, so we shall see...*Wink

Edit: OK, it appears I got the UUP download as there is no .esd file in sight. Upgraded fine, first time through. A first for me with UUP. Before now it simply refused to download the upgrade through WU.

 

I was just mentioning the fact that it is different between Enterprise and Pro, I did not see this mentioned at the top of this post or in any of the other posts to this thread.

I've only had one problem so far. I tried to pay a bill online with Edge and it wouldn't go through. I don't know if it's a problem with Edge or the site not being compatible with Edge. I had no problem with Chrome. Everything else seems to be working so I guess I don't need the ISO.

 

FWIW...

I've always had issues with one site... Verizon,both FIOS and Phone. Gets cranky and stays cranky with FF, Edge, IE. Only seems happy with Chrome or a Chromium based browser. Everything else doesn't seem to care.
