Windows 10: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16170 for PC

Uh huh . . . I'm about ready to throw in the towel for tonight too.

 

One more try for me and it's at about 70% preparing install.

And it failed again.

 

Well.. bed time. I'm going to try 'method #2' in the AM.

There has to be an easier way to get these insider builds.

That particular error has been around a long time, and is almost always seen with Windows Update. We were seeing it back in the days of Win7.

I do know this - I was using Edge to download all the ISOs for Creator's update from Download Windows 10 Insider Preview Advanced (and I mean all - including SDK, ADK, etc.) and after I had downloaded about 6 of them, I started getting the following error a very similar error, where it told me to contact Microsoft Support Center with a similar error code and also another ID of some sort. I just tried it again and it is letting me download again, but it was not early this morning before 16170 was released.

I wonder if that error is actually the exact same thing as it was back in the Win7 days - WU simply cannot establish a reliable connection to the servers to download the update because it is just over worked....

On a different note - yesterday I spent a good part of the day evaluating my system performance, wrt whether or not I should use the optimized, more recent and WHQL-certified driver for my Marvell 9128 chipset that runs my 2 SATA 6.0 GBps ports. So, after making the decision to go ahead and take the plunge, I used Snappy Driver Installer to update all of the other drivers that Windows had not done since my clean install last month.

Upon having 16170 installed, I ran SDI again - no drivers were out of date.

IOW, 16170 did not mess with my drivers like previous builds have once I've installed my own 3rd party drivers.

 

I got both of my IP computers updated although one took longer, but then it has only a 10/100 Ethernet adapter. Need to get a Gigabit Low Profile PCIe X1 card for it.

 

I don't know where that cache is, or how it's implemented. In theory, yes, but it could be stored in the registry as well, or in a database like Edge favorites are.

 

Being on a HDD on VM with Fast Ring settings can be a real pain...avg upgrade time: 1 hour and 10 min! Whereas on my laptop, using dual boot, upgrading the SSD only takes an average of 22 minutes!

 

Agreed. That's why on this last clean install I moved my VHDs to my primary SSD, since it is just as large as any of my mechanical HDs.

 

Have you tried going back to one of the previous builds and updating? If you haven't give it a shot.

 

As much as it was a surprise, no surprises with installation and making of .ISO. Hope some new stuff will start showing up soon.

 

Where is the Sources folder (with the ESD file) found on Creators Update (and build 16170)?

I was able to easily find the Sources folder on Anniversary update and earlier,
but not anymore *Confused

 

I don't think there's ESD file at all and will not be any in future. If you want ISO, you'll have to do it this way: UUP to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 Build Upgrade Files - Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
