You probably can't install Pro because you only have a license for Home. If you received the free upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.x Home, your license is for Home.

If you bought a new computer with Windows 10 Home; you can only update or clean install Windows Home. If you want to go to Pro, you must buy a Windows 10 Pro version upgrade.

Note: I've used Home for Windows 7 and 8.x; however, the version name may be a little different but the resulting upgrade info will be the same.

I have a theory...... like I have many of...<1% come true *Smile

I think they may have been testing "procedure"....dl, setup, install, telementry, etc., etc.

All of which would not be changes to the OS, per se. Taking off the watermark was just something to do to make a visible difference. I think they were testing some deployment stuff.

    Just a theory......

I just downloaded and installed "Cortana Show Me" and looked at one of the tutorials. Pretty good. That will be something I can use in teaching Windows 10!

Edit: FWIW, Cortana Show Me is separate from Cortana, so shouldn't interfere with your computing.

Sounds good to me, TC. They've done it before.

  6. Yeah, there's a lot going on under the hood both with testing and code changes, that never gets a spot in the release notes.

Personally I would like to get a 100% complete and accurate changelog of every single bit and byte in new Windows builds, but I guess that is asking for too much.

This is what is normally downloaded when that option is clicked:

I don't know why in your case the file is not downloaded and AFAIK is a tool used to make an installation or upgrade directly from the UUP files (combined with other commands), I don't know much about that, I have not tried it yet.

Yes that is exactly what it is, but MS documentation on that file is non existent as usual, so it is difficult to figure out what it really does.(exact purpose)

  9. In my case, the WindowsUpdateBox.exe was downloaded. When I clicked it on it, nothing happened. As such, I just went back to downloading all of the UUP files and everything worked. The option to download the WindowsUpdateBox file was a new one and one I haven't seen before when firing up the UUP Dump utility, so I thought I would mention it here, in case someone knew what this new option meant and what it did.

    Thanks for the input.

Yes, now I realize that I didn't read your comment well.
    Your welcome.

I have been reading a bit more about the subject and I will try to do the installation or upgrade directly from the UUP files using that tool, it is quite interesting... *Nerd

  11. It's quite a bit faster. For me, it usually took like 1.5 hours through Windows Update to download the files and get ready to restart to actually install the update. Through this new tool, it only takes me around 25 minutes to download the files. After that, making an ISO to install the update only takes an additional 10 minutes. In total, around 35 minutes to install the update through this new tool vs 1.5 hours using Windows Update. A significant difference.

Your mileage may vary, but I thought I would just share my own experiences of using this new tool. Its very handy and very easy to use.

I think you didn't understand me well, I'm not talking about updating with UUP dump, a tool that I've been using for a looong time and which I've been talking about in this forum for several months:

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Fast+Skip Ahead Build 17035 for PC

Cumulative Update KB4043961 Build 16299.19 for PC

I'm talking about doing the upgrade using the WindowsUpdateBox tool, directly from the UUP files without creating the ISO.

Oh, I see now. Basically download the UUP files, then download the WindowsUpdateBox.exe file from the same site, and we are good to go! Interesting...I will try that later...

    Thanks for the clarification.

I had the update ready, so I selected "update and shut down". Next day, I switched on, stupidly expecting things to just work, and it took another 25 minutes.
