Worked the second time but took ages. Something is seriously fubared
    with uup.

Does anybody know if the old regedit to force full install.esd method still work?

  3. I had no issues upgrading the physical machine except that the old windows installation, being cleaned now by Disk Cleaner, weighed in at 27.5 GB. That's more than a third of the disk space I have allocated to Windows 10. I wonder if MS could just code a simple switch to give the user the option of keeping an old version or just removing it. Most of us do regular imaging of our machines after all. I'm not going to be saving my old 16273 - this build feels pretty stable right now.

This would be a really great option especially for tablets/hybrids with 32 GB mmc drives. It can be difficult to upgrade these without freeing up space so windows.old can fit on drive. Of course, user would have to understand that if upgrade craps out, the only options would be to clean install, or restore a system image backup (assuming user made one, of course).

So, even if you set switch, you should probably have a "confirm you want to do this" screen as well.

Also, it should speed up the install significantly.

Why not post or look on feedback hub to see if suggested, or create a new feedback and post a link?

The term is so puerile, it's pathetic.

  6. OK, I just did. Thanks for the encouragement. This would be incredibly simple to code as they already have the warning when you run Disk Cleanup - System Files.

  7. Not sure how to find a link to my feedback on the Hub but here's the text of the suggestion.

    -----------------------------------------------------

The last upgrade I made to build 16353 from 16273 (Fast/Skip Ahead ring) used 27.5 GB which is more than one-third of the disk space I have allocated on a small SSD. I also dual boot with Windows Server 2016 and Debian Sid.I've long thought that an option to skip the windows.old folder (and other update folders) should be provided with a confirmation which you already have with Disk Cleanup. This would likely reduce the update time significantly as well as being a service for those of us running Windows 10 IP's on notebooks as well.

That is a false positive. There's no trojan in the tool. It works, the only thing you have to do if you get it flagged is to tell your IObit Malware Fighter program that it is a false positive. If you do not know how to do it, consult the help files and documentation of that application.

There is nothing in the code of the tool that causes it to abort.

In my tests I've got it to work only when installing Anniversary Update version 1607 build 14393, opting in for Fast Ring and upgrading. In fact, not only does it work in this scenario but it is the only option.

Sorry to hear that but something is not running right in that laptop. My second desktop with Phenom II and super slow HDD (WD 750 Green, 5400Rpm) that I took out of main computer and where was to slow even as data disk, takes "only" 2.5Hrs not counting download. Maybe your problem is with disk usage %. Both, that HDD and SSD in this one run at or close to 100% usage during some stages of update. Higher the usage, faster it would perform.

Everything else works, without issues. HDD, CPU and GPU are 100% working. I have tested this in every possible way. A clean install in early December took 18 minutes to OOBE, then upgrading to last ESD builds less than hour when done directly after the clean install, about an hour when done later. Same numbers with each and every ESD build.

My last clean install two weeks ago still took the same 18 minutes, but it took six hours to get to Restart now phase when upgrading to next Insider Skippy build after the clean install, build 16273. Yesterday's upgrade took just over five and a half hours, first over four hours to Restart now, then about 90 minutes for restart, the upgrade process itself.

The fastest upgrade since December (start of UUP) has taken about four hours, the slowest ESD upgrade was about an hour and a half, usually just under an hour.

Notice that upgrades now take about as long, around four five hours, on Hyper-V virtual machines on this host and about two three hours on VMware virtual machines. My Windows 10 tablet on same network also requires close to three hours for the upgrade.

  11. Just installed this on my IP VM. No issues so far.

  12. The interesting thing about this false positive is that sometimes I get a hit and sometimes not. Most often Windows defender does not react at all to the UUP2ISO setup file.

I wonder what is going on here... *Smile

I have emailed those AV / Malware scan makers I know that falsely flag either the installer or the tool itself, waiting it to be cleared. I will post in tutorial thread as soon as I have something more to tell.

If you go back to hub, and read it, there is an option to share the link e.g.

  15. I think the problem is the tool itself as the latest original script also gets marked as Troijan. Currently only Chrome flags the file(s) as dangerous when attempting to download. WD does not react at all, nor does Edge nor IE.

    Interesting! *Smile
