Windows 10: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Skip Ahead Build 17639 - April 4

Phew!!! That was hard work! Windows update failed, two errors, first a Error code: 0x80070002, followed this. Then ran update a second time, failed again, it keep reverting back to 'preparing to install'. Downloaded the ISO (from the mini-server'), mounted it in File Explorer and it installed *Smile However it still took an hour...got there in the end.

 

This will be a long day, once again. Luckily I have enough beverage of my choice to cope with this.

The Skip Ahead Update, Build 17369, is using the latest microcode from Intel on both my i7-2600 and i7-920.

The Inspectre now shows that both Spectre and Meltdown as fixed on both processors.

HWinfo also shows the microcode is updated on both to match Intel March guidance.

The i7-920 is labeled as "Stopped" in the Intel April's Intel guidance yet HWinfo shows it has been updated by Build 17369!

 

Umm, not here.

 

Kewl. I've enabled it. After a reboot, I'll see if it works here.

Yeah that is the AV protection perk weird WD isn't automatically protecting *Confused

 

The below is a Sandy Bridge i7-2600 in an ASRock H77.

 

You listed 2 of them One of them was a Core i7 920, a Bloomfield CPU which is the same family as mine - a Core i7 965 EE.

Hence my reply.

It is listed clearly in my system specs as well.

 

Im going to have to spend some time on this build. Its not picking up this build so Ill have to format and re-enable skippy.

 

No idea how your machine is showing that. It shouldn't.

 

Temp files showing as 2.23 GB in settings,





when I select to delete the files this shows,





and running TreeSize in background. I've ran Ccleaner and manually deleted history in both browsers I use and checked the temp folder. Just wondering if it's only me getting this error or have I missed something?

Build 17639 is updating the microcode when booting - a normal process for Windows. The new version matches the March document from Intel, see https://newsroom.intel.com/wp-conten...e-guidance.pdf

Before I installed build 17639 this machine was using microcode version IB.

It is odd, because the April document from Intel says the i7-920 is "Stopped" see here https://newsroom.intel.com/wp-conten...e-guidance.pdf

Yet Windows is using the microcode "target" version listed in the March update which seem to have been released to Microsoft as "production" and used in build 17639.

I hope Microsoft keep this microcode update in place for the full production release next Tuesday and make/keep my i7-920 safe.

My other machine, a sandy bridge i7-2600, also has its microcode updated by build 17639. Windows FCU was using version 12 and is now using version 2D. The BIOS of it's ASRock H77 motherboard says version 11.
