Windows 10: Antimalware Service Executable won't stop running!!! (2021)

so a while ago my norton subscription ended, and since then windows defender has taken over on my PC. due to my PC being a tiny laptop, it's pretty weak so i want to free up as much of my disk as i can, and MsMpEng.exe has been running nonstop for months. I've tried everything online. changing the scan schedule, editing the registry & group policy, you name it. I tried to give myself permission to just delete it, but when i tried to change ownership from trustedinstaller (default owner) to myself, the check box to do so was just gone. (the only instance of this i've seen online was the check box disappearing, but i never even had one to begin with) I tried changing ownership through powershell, and once i was able to type the command right, the console just said that access was denied. I know the risks of not using an antivirus but at this point i can only use around 4gb of ram at any given time because of this damn file. I don't care much for this PC and i just need it to be working. please please if anyone is able to help it would be greatly appreciated, this is kind of a last resort before i just buy a new PC <3

I am still having the problem even with the latest prerelease build. The Antimalware Service Executable process is often running and taking a lot of CPU, disk and memory. The same The Antimalware Service Executable -> Windows Defender Service ...
Too often the PC (an I7 one, 8 GB EliteBook HP) is stuck and even the response of a keyboard entry is very slow!!

Any suggestions?
